I dont need to tell anyone here this, but if youre on the fence about that spendy component cable, GET IT.
In my situation, I got it for my Model 1 genesis, plugged it into my 1 smaller crt with component, and WOW.
My entire life id only used composite. I tested s video on my projector tv (actually a very nice one with good color and no washout) with the ps1, and it looks pretty darn good, but this genesis looks arcade quality. I tried out the Williams game cart on it to see and the games are SO crisp and clear.
Sadly my only tv with component is the smaller crt and the Wega. However I do have a tink 2x pro, but I prefer the crt right now.
I unfortunately got an s video cable for my ps2 as well before I knew theyre not the best way to go, but am ordering a component cable for it now too.

For the PS2 make sure you change the output settings to component. I got mine and spent hours trying to figure out why everything was purple. Never even thought to see if there was a setting for it until I luckily found an old forum post that enlightened me.
