“A clan of paedophiles wants to destroy democracy in Columbia. Harsh, yes, but that’s the reality”. Those were the opening words of Colombian president Gustavo Petro as he condemned Donald Trump’s US attack on Venezuela. US forces killed well over 100 civilians in the attack and abducted Venezuelan president Maduro and his wife.
The rest of Petro’s speech was just as uncompromising. He told a huge crowd that Trump is trying to distract from the Epstein files, that he wants to turn their region into “another Libya, full of slaves”. Petro’s solidarity with the people of Colombia and their neighbours was absolute, they are all one people. And he reminded his audience that their region is the birthplace of Bolivarian socialism that the US wants to destroy:

It was a masterclass in fearless principle and resistance. The same speech, or one very like it, should be in the mouths of every national leader now. Instead, the UK gets Starmer essentially bleating “I think whatever Trump says” and claiming to support international law while kissing the backside of fascist criminality.

He'd sound crazy if he weren't right.

I wonder what an honest comparison of the evil acts of Columbians and Americans would look like. Maybe we’d find out Americans are more heartless.
