  I have very little respect for Valens’ writing after seeing articles spreading lies and essentially striking out at a vtuber company for being rejected by them. Vice is crap, but Valens is no better.

  Good on nu-Waypoint but I do want to make it clear:

  This is not the Waypoint that made a name for social justice oriented reporting and leftist gaming content. They all got fired. Austin Walker has nine million side hustles but is mostly over at Friends at the Table, Natalie Watson has a fucking BAFTA as part of Half Mermaid, and Rob/Chia/Patrick are now Remap. And the rest of the crew have also moved on.

  This is the Waypoint that Vice created because they decided they wanted to have a gaming outlet again after firing old Waypoint. And mad props to Valens et al for standing up for THEIR writing but… big ol’ asterisk.

  Lemme take a guess here: mgmt are going this start comaining that human written articles are dropping off in quality so they will need to focus more on AIGen content.

  Valens said on her stream that she was paid $30 an article; a contributor to the previous iteration of Waypoint, Nick Capozzoli, said rates used to be at least $300.

  Holy shit.

  I’ve dabbled a bit in writing tech articles. I was published in a print magazine >20 years ago, and I think I got around $300 for it. More recently, a few articles I did for a niche tech website went for $100 each.

  $30/article? For a site that has Vice behind it? Yeah, pretty easy to walk away from that money.

    I had to do a double take at the idea waypoint exists after they fired the entire team (by accident) a few years ago
