Microsoft pushes staff to use internal AI tools more, and may consider this in reviews. 'Using AI is no longer optional.'

Did this Microsoft tactic ever work in their favour? Forcing people to use things they don’t like? Internet Explorer, Edge, Bing Search, AI and so on. I think it’s not a long-term success story. Also, why focus on tool usage instead of actual goals.

Bing is used a lot more than most people think. It’s also used by sites like DuckDuckGo, Qwant, Swisscows, etc.
As for why: They want them to train their own replacement.

I live in Seattle. Got a bunch of friends at Amazon. This is their policy as well; “use AI to do your work.” It’s not a mandatory thing there…yet, but it’s there.
Absolutely a modeling and collection tool for them.

So basically, they are saying “we invested a fuck ton of money into this so you better fucking use it.”

That’s good. The more Microsoft boycotts itself, the more people shift to Linux.
Using AI tools sometimes makes sense, sometimes it doesn’t. And by forcing the usage of a tool that won’t necessarily help, MS is only adding more meaningless busywork to its own development, like sand in an engine.

They’re going to end up in “the only tool we have is a hammer” territory soon.

If the tools were as useful as MS claimed, they wouldn’t need to force people to use them.
