The point of self hosting is not to engage people going in your server. The point of self hosting is to have control over your infrastructure. It’s like renting or buying a home.
When you buy a home, you don’t complain that no one wants to sleep in your home 😆

Absolutely wrong. I’ve had multiple I’ve kept going for years because I’ve created them for specific use-cases that literanlbody else touches, and I’ve run and contributed to multiple huge public projects. Never once did I ever think of abandoning the former because nobody else was using them.
This sounds like .using of someone who is new to the scene and thinks it works like social media influencer BS.
It does not.

Your may have been different (the commits adds to your portfolio) or you may just have been a hobbyist but other than that, why would one be willing to sink hours!

Building stuff is fun, and using something created that does exactly what you want is cool.
Why create a self hosting setup if you’re the only one using it? Same idea.

I think you misunderstand the word “self” :
noun plural selves a person or thing referred to with respect to complete individuality: one’s own self.
a person’s nature, character, etc.: his better self.
personal interest. Philosophy. the ego; that which knows, remembers, desires, suffers, etc., as contrasted with that known, remembered, etc. the uniting principle, as a soul, underlying all subjective experience
Sounds to me like you’re more interested in the ego portion of self.
I’ve spent years doing things for myself, my friends, my family, not from ego, but because I believe the things I’ve done are important (either to me or to my friends/family), and that I’m the person that can do those things.
