Hey remember when Google used to have a motto, “Don’t be evil”?
Used to.
- Comment on Microsoft pulls MS365 Business Premium from nonprofits 18 hours ago:
Yup it’s mostly bullshit. Someone, somewhere might benefit, but certainly not any of the people within two thousands miles of where the rich guy lived. Which is still better than nothing, but Bill Gates could end homelessness in America immediately if he chose to do so. (I’m not saying it would be easy or fast, just that he has the money to make it happen.) He could make ALL COLLEGE FREE for students. Musk could have too, likely for less than he spent on Twitter.

Walmart: No.

It sounds like Klarna is a nightmare that should be avoided as much as possible.

At this point if you’re buying their stuff, you’re the reason they get away with it and you’re the problem because you can’t control them, you can only control you… and you didn’t.

Me too. You mean out of a giant cannon to the sun, right? And it’s still Ajit Pai, right? This guy here can make the top ten though.
- Comment on Nintendo Anti-Piracy Policy Device Lock Update Warns of Console Bricks for Unauthorized Use 1 week ago:
Easy solution: Don’t buy one. Play games on a PC. Nintendo isn’t your friend.
- Comment on Games on my PC start stuttering pretty badly when they aren't the active window for a while. Have to close the game and restart to resolve the stuttering issue. What exactly is causing this? 1 week ago:
The next time this happens look at task manager and see what % memory you have available.
Also as others have said consider replacing your HDD with an SSD, that’s the single biggest upgrade you can make to see a massive difference in quality of life with your PC.
- Comment on Meta Reportedly Eyeing 'Super Sensing' Tech for Smart Glasses 1 week ago:
Some of us are face blind and this could be helpful.
No fucking way I’d trust meta not to exploit it though, so this is a hard pass.

Because after twenty years of it your body will be wrecked.
I work in IT and have multiple coworkers who actually work physically harder than I do (in their roles vs. mine) in their 60s. One is 65.
Got lots of 65 year old factory or construction workers, do ya? And I’m talking about laborers, not supervisors etc.
- Comment on Apple Fights Back Against Ruling Requiring External Payment Options 1 week ago:
I’m never giving epic games a dime, I can assure you if that.
This is one of those things many people seem to think will be a win but will actually suck once every app is able to charge you directly.
- Comment on Seattle Sets the Stage for Automatic Traffic Camera Expansion - The Urbanist 1 week ago:
All that surveillance and they let all the criminals go free anyways…so, what’s the point?
They’re not using these to catch criminals - that’d be like expecting anti-gun laws to give murderers pause. No, they use them to make people like you and me pay hundreds of dollars when the light goes from yellow to red while we’re in the intersection or close enough to it that we couldn’t safely stop without stopping literally in the middle of it all. That’s what this is about - making people like us pay. Not actual criminals who commit a crime that they would be arrested for.
- Comment on Seattle Sets the Stage for Automatic Traffic Camera Expansion - The Urbanist 1 week ago:
the move is a first step toward the broader deployment of those cameras, a tool that has the potential to dramatically improve traffic safety across the city if implemented well.
It’s Seattle. It will not, sadly, be implemented well.
- Comment on Seattle Sets the Stage for Automatic Traffic Camera Expansion - The Urbanist 1 week ago:
Agreed. I have a compromise. They can put in all the cameras they want - but absolutely cannot, upon pain of losing 50% of their total budget for a year per violation - outsource or subcontract the operations or anything akin to the operations of the system at all. Hire IT staff to run it, pay people to process the data. No you can’t use AI. Do this or fuck off, Seattle.
I will never ever forget when a red light camera came to Redmond, at the turn leading to driving through Microsoft’s campus. Can you guess what happens when you piss of a bunch of smart motivated people who have money and aren’t necessarily the kindest people? That shit got challenged and removed after about six months. I still see the stump/the concrete it was embedded when when I go to my buddy’s house, and it warms my heart literally ever. single. fucking. time.

That’s why I play using a PC and not a console. Though PC components have also been overpriced for years.

This is silly. Absolute worst case, we go back to bartering for goods and services. There will never be a need to panic.

Or I do, but I wait until they’re $8 on Steam.

- Comment on Religions have some of the wackiest rules 3 weeks ago:
Nope, see something say something. I do the same thing with racism or fascism. I call it out.
I’m not fed up of circumcision discussions, I’m fed up with people who feel like they’ve been wronged as a result of the procedure. I’d never heard of such a thing before finding Reddit.
- Comment on Religions have some of the wackiest rules 3 weeks ago:
I never said I was tired of the conversation. I’m tired of people like the ones I left on Reddit who always bring up circumcision and want to act like they’ve been horribly victimized because their parents followed a medical doctor’s advice.
It’s pathetic. Some of them even mention suing their parents. This seems like a mental disorder. I don’t like it and if I see it, I will say something about it. If you don’t like that, perhaps you should block me instead of writing a reply I’d never have looked at if only Lenny gave me that option.
- Comment on Does anyone else hate knowing stuff and looking "smart"? 3 weeks ago:
Then you should talk to a professional until you feel differently. This is not normal. Being smart is good. Being curious is good. Being a lifelong learner is ideal. Whoever or whatever taught or showed you otherwise is wrong.
- Comment on Religions have some of the wackiest rules 3 weeks ago:
I will block you because this is tedious, but know that I will always discuss this and never let it go uncommented on because it’s unhinged. While you supposedly don’t make this your entire personality there were those on Reddit who definitely did, and you smell just like them. I will never stop speaking out that this whole thing is a bullshit non issue.
- Comment on Religions have some of the wackiest rules 3 weeks ago:
Tell that to the doctors recommending it then, not to us. As far as I’m concerned this obsession over it is a mental disease and not one I’m pleased to see making the jump from Reddit.
I’m circumcised, and I don’t give a shit, and I never will, and it’s not the same thing as FGM at all.
- Comment on Amazon’s killing a feature that let you download and backup Kindle books 2 months ago:
That’s why I don’t download or purchase ebooks from Amazon, but only get them from places I can download a non-DRM’d copy. I’m not looking to break any laws, but if I pay for it, I want to be able to have it whenever I want even when the Internet is down. Recently a buddy gave me his old blu-ray juke box, and now I’m doing the same thing with my favorite movies as well. And building a home lab. It’s finally time I decreased (not completely ended) my reliance on the cloud, given the shit show my nation collectively voted for.
- Comment on Microsoft Study Finds Relying on AI Kills Your Critical Thinking Skills 2 months ago:
I use it to write code for me sometimes, saving me remembering the different syntax and syntactic sugar when I hop between languages. And I use to answer questions about things I wonder - it always provides references. So far it’s been quite useful. And for all that people bitch and piss and cry giant crocodile tears while gnashing their teeth - I quite enjoy Apple AI. It’s summaries have been amazing and even scarily accurate. No, it doesn’t mean Siri’s good now, but the rest of it’s pretty amazing.
