I have a feeling that from now on, only Donald Trump can be president.

this would’ve been considered crazy old for a president
It still is…
Neoliberals tried to use trump to lower the bar so that historically unpopular candidates no one wanted like Hillary, Biden, and Harris had a slim shit of winning.
But it obviously doesn’t work well.
In a fair primary, no geriatric is going to make it to the general. Voters from neither party honestly want a president that old, but because both of the only two parties are ok with it, it didn’t matter what voters want.

Honestly, the bar is so low to be President that there is only one requirement: Money. Lots of it. And to tell the truth, it’s been like that for generations. Whomever spends the most, wins. Welcome to Capitalism, kids!

Money is most important when voters dislike both candidates.
It doesn’t not take a billion dollars to run a presidential campaign, I’d argue 90% of that is a complete waste.
It’s very cheap to run a winning campaign for a charismatic candidate with popular policy positions.
It is very very expensive to get Dem voters to vote for some one significantly more conservative than they are.

The office of US president has become meaningless … it’s the people with all the money who control the inner workings of government that have the power … they just allow everyone else to elect a meaningless figurehead to throw rotten vegetables at.

This ain’t new and it ain’t unique to America:
The President in particular is very much a figurehead — he wields no real power whatsoever. He is apparently chosen by the government, but the qualities he is required to display are not those of leadership but those of finely judged outrage. For this reason the President is always a controversial choice, always an infuriating but fascinating character. His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it. On those criteria Zaphod Beeblebrox is one of the most successful Presidents the Galaxy has ever had — he has already spent two of his ten presidential years in prison for fraud.
The difference is some of us have been talking about it for decades…
Some just figured it out in the last year, but are often beligerently resist to the people who saw it way before them, and completely refuse to believe there may be other things they haven’t noticed yet.
If people think any of what is happening right now is new or unique, they need to spend a lot more time reading (actual books too) and less time typing.

No, only rich men have. That doesn’t mean others can’t, but it would be unprecedented.

They really won’t risk another Jimmy Carter.
