  There was a female pope. She kept it hidden until she was too pregnant to hide it at which point they killed her.

    This is one of those fun harmless myths that I will nonetheless bust for you.

    That’s a legend, there’s no evidence for it to be true, and the dates typically given for Pope Joan are already filled with popes we can prove did reign at that time, as coins bearing both the image of the pope and the emperor exist from those dates.

    Also, the people who really hated the papacy never bring up Pope Joan as an issue.

    Fun fact tho, typical tellings of the myth indicate that her lover insisted she dress as a man, so she did. So, make of that what you will.
