What was this guy doing to break his pihole all the time? I can’t remember the last time I logged into mine at all.

Mine has not broken exactly, but some sites just break.
As in I cannot click the buttons to decline or accept cookies or scroll the page. I’ll have to open my Pi-Hole’s page and disable blocking for a few seconds and refresh the broken page.
I know it has worked when the page dims and the buttons are more in focus. Decline, site works again.

The problem is that some of the block lists are just too eager on the blocking.
I don’t see how the author can claim that NextDNS or AdGuard are any better in that regard though, as they rely on the same lists. 🤦

I use both. I have NextDNS for mobile and PiHole for the local Intranet. A VPN to the home network for DNS did not work well enough for me.

I use Technitium DNS server on a mini PC to serve the same function as a Pi-Hole, and it works flawlessly.

Before clicking, I already knew this would lead to NextDNS. Turns out, my experiences were quite similar. Sadly, my beloved RPI is just sitting idle these days. Maybe I’m just a bad admin, and that caused my problems. Probably…
Anyway, I really prefer to use SAAS for this purpose. You could use any DNS you like, doesn’t have to be this one. If you’re the kind of pi admin who has the time and energy, running your own pi-hole is still probably the best option though.

Listen, I appreciate the perspective, but this is just an ad.

It absolutely is an ad.
Mysterious issues with dns. External service solves it!

I had all of these problems with Jellyfin and then I discovered Netflix (www.netflix.com/totallynotareferral)

Well, tbh I did the same (switched to a competitor, not to NextDNS). Hosting my own recursive DNS with Adguard and DoH (to use it outside of my LAN) lead to strange unexpected errors and downtime, and my family was not happy about that. Now me RPi is still serving me stuff, but DNS is outsourced.
