I have no idea what the hell is happening in this drawing. I remember this issue back in the day and never thought twice about it… but look at that leg armor. WTAF is going on with that torso. The shoulder pads are there to prevent the head from turning… the gun arm just boggles the mind.

I absolutely love how the most pivotal thing that happened in the Metroid series happened in a Gameboy game. Probably 3/4 of the people that played Super Metroid had absolutely no idea the intro was recapping a Gameboy game.
How about the fact that baby Metroid was so important it still comes up all the way into Metroid 5.

Except none of that happened, as I would have been 8 at the time. But it just goes to paint the picture for how different times we live in. Back then, the fact that Samus was a girl was protected for months. And it was a shock.
If anyone tried that today, the surprise would be leaked months if not years before the game actually released.
Oh, and the state of sexuality acceptance is in an entirely different place than it was in 1991. But thats a story for a different thread.

The original Metroid was released in 1986. It was well known that Samus was a woman in 1991.

I was subscribed to this for like 8 years in my childhood. Thanks for bringing back some memories. That reminds me that it might’ve been worth some money if I had kept all of them.
