This feels like a cheap throwaway after he shut the border to asylum seekers. Just papering over his own little fascist border policy

it is: he’s been taking pointless and ineffectual actions like this since he started his presidential campaign to cover for the racist, homophobic and classist bullshit he’s done in his 53 year long career and i’m dumbfounded by how well it works every time i see it plastered all over the lemmyverse .
Good. Get people tax numbers so they can legally work and go to school and strengthen the country.
Legal people can report shitty employers and slum landlords. These are the assholes we should deport.
More workers means more homes built means more stuff bought means more businesses means more income.
“legal people” nobody is “illegal” friend, leave that kind of dehumanising inaccurate language to the far right
👍well said, Trump 2024🔥
Funny, because your candidate doesn't support any of that.

While I don't agree with illegal immigration, it's good to see that at least the ones that have kept their head down, contributed to society and community, and have essentially made themselves part of us at least have the option to make it official without having to split up their family in the meantime.

Yeah, I’m with you. And there are more stipulations than in the headline. They had to have been married yesterday or earlier (to prevent a bunch of people running off to get married just for this), have been in the country for ten years or more, never been deported, and some other stuff. It seems like a reasonably basis for saying it’s better to let the person stay legally than split up the family.
