Was unaware of what a trench gun was so I had to watch this short but informative documentary on it.

I also didn’t know about it. Here is some Wikipedia for anyone interested

Unlike most modern pump-action shotguns, the Winchester Model 1897 (versions of which were type classified as the Model 97 or M97 for short) fired each time the action closed with the trigger depressed (that is, it lacks a trigger disconnector). Coupled with its five-shot capacity, this characteristic allowed troops to fire the whole magazine with great speed by simply keeping the trigger held and running the action as quickly as possible, known as “slam-firing”. This made it extremely effective in close combat, such that troops referred to it as the “trench-sweeper” or “trench broom”. Shortly before the end of the war, the German government protested the use of shotguns in combat, claiming it to cause unnecessary suffering.[23][24] The Model 1897 was used again in World War II by the United States Army and Marine Corps, where it was used alongside the similarly militarized version of the hammerless Model 1912.[25] Some were still in service during the Korean War[26] and the Vietnam War.[27]

Short? 40 minutes long, when most of the information was already said in the first 20 minutes.

Interesting subject matter but such stretching of the script is very slop-like

As far as length most of the documentary’s I watch are 3+ hours long. Could be right, he was very repetitive. He also sounded pretty natural but maybe that’s where they are now.

That video says it takes 4.5 seconds to shoot 6 rounds

I don’t think the auto fire gets you more than a second and a half, if that, over a standard pump

Rather than make the rate of fire as fast as possible, I wonder if it was based on the time a person typically takes to collapse after getting hit, exposing the next guy just in time for the next shot. Nailing that timing would give the best results with the least ammo and require the least skill to use. You could point the thing, duck behind cover and hold the trigger.

And then my fellow Canadians were even more enthusaistic than the Germans or the French in using gas… same with night raiding and sapping. The pioneer spirit makes for some batshit crazy nasty combat. It’s wjere the whole Canadian Geneva checklist jokes come from.
