I was born in the 50s and started high school in the 60s, and was aware of news.

Unions were legal.
Strikes were legal.
Some people worked 6 days a week but 5 was more common; you heard “the weekend” more than “my day off”.
Soldiers and police weren’t killing strikers (source) - list of labor dispute deaths going back to 1850s lists none between 1936 and 1979

The part about defending elites instead of common people - yeah probably, I can’t think how to research that. The rest I dunno, this will just get douchevoted anyway, but I mean we should strive for accuracy right? Or maybe we don’t care.
