I’ve had 2-3 experiences like that on Lemmy and kbin, but far more on reddit. On Lemmy it tends to be “intelligent but deranged person who hates you” while reddit tends to be “insane or unintelligent person who hates you”.

Don’t worry, lemmy definitely beats Reddit in the socially maladjusted toxic asshole department.

Yes, this exactly. I’ve had to block 2 of them and everything’s been smooth sailing since.

If someone starts out aggressive or insulting but is willing to have a real conversation, great. Some people are relentlessly angry or condescending and at that point, fuck 'em. I don't need that in my life.

I debated it for quite a while because they were legitimately trying to have conversations, but they were tankies and rather aggressive. Finally just pulled the trigger and I’m happy I did.

Extremely toxic here

Some of the people here are downright scary in how toxic and antisocial they are. I just got called a social vampire in another thread for having the audacity to say I personally want to return to office because I miss learning from colleagues, which just doesn’t really happen when everyone is wfh. I’m pretty introverted myself but holy shit, the vitriol was intense. Unbelievable.

They’re the people who are in the bottom percentile of intelligence, but fail to realize it and instead think every thought they copied from someone else is God’s gift to man. Instead of being smart enough to think or move on they’d rather just exist in their bedroom dwelling on the infinite doomscrolling mentality where every other loser who congregates the forum pats them on the back for being another copy-pasted tankie with no social skills.
I have blocked so many communities from showing up because I know I’m going to just see the same trite extremist weirdos over and over. Still would rather use this for memes and random info scrolling over reddit simply because of the development policy differences

I said I miss learning through osmosis, when you hear colleagues talking about something you may have heard of or read about but never seen in real life. So you get hands on practical real life experience on new concepts - or vice versa, teach someone else something new. You know, a healthy exchange of knowledge and ideas to help each other learn and grow.
This guy posted a 3000 word rant about how much he hates me, and he’s going to need weeks to prepare for that mentally and make sure he’s got the right outfit on and knows what kind of soda to offer me. Like dude wtf…

The 1% of super awkward people. It’s like 50% love and 50% borderline violent ideological debates.

I truly enjoy a good debate “in good faith” where both parties lay out their positions and defend themselves and challenge my views. There’s very little of that here. Just pure unbridled rage.

A lot is just assuming your opponent’s views. Strawmanning all day. And I do it, too. I like to try to roll it back at some point.
