I can’t imagine being so damn hateful as to not want a large percentage of my country to feel included.

I wish that was historically uncommon, or not the exact situation in the US right now. You don’t even have to speak Spanish; a long list of personal lifestyle choices, ranging from who you love to what you eat to what you drive, are all potential grounds to be excluded. It leaks pretty good into Canada, as well.
