You are supposed to have the Molotov closed, the idea is for the released gasoline to catch the fire when the bottle breaks. Else you risk igniting anything in between you and your target.

Best if you have the original cap for the bottle, put it in, seal it further with tape. You want the bottle to shatter essentially creating an explosion getting the contents everywhere.
