Purists didn’t like it, but it led to a rise in viewership. It was a disaster because the pucks and cameras were very expensive. Many stadiums still had live camera operators. I was an intern at the Spectrum and the brand new CoreStates Center, which had just been completed that year and already required structural renovation to support the new automated camera systems.

It turned out to be a bad idea because it was distracting for fans and taught beginners to watch the sport wrong. You're not supposed to spend the whole game trying to follow the puck, you're supposed to be watching the players; if you do that for a while you'll be able to start to intuit where the puck is based on the collective action and attention of the players even if you don't see it.
