It’s actually because they started offering syrup filled, whip cream and caramel covered drinks directly on the menu. They were briefly infamous for like 1000 calorie macchiatos.
Little shops had flavor shots before, but the rest were pretty much donut shops that sold regular utility coffee, and the sugar and fat was external (donuts sandwiches and pastries).
