I am really torn on donations to lemmy. For full disclosure, I used to donate $20/month to lemmy…up until the defederation from ani.social happened. I appreciate that it is the software that this site uses and relies on to function, but at the same time, my donations would fund developers and instance admins that I think do harm on the community ecosystem side of things. After that event, I switched from donating to the lemmy project to donating to the instance directly instead.

My dream scenario is that someday the folks over at piefed are able to implement a site migration tool that would allow an instance to migrate in-place from lemmy to piefed. Based on the conversations I have seen in the piefed matrix, I think it is technically possible, but nobody has done the work yet.
