SimpleX doesn’t even have a desktop client. Discord is mostly used for gaming.

shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 11 months agoTrue. Matrix is more for that. Or possibly SimpleX.

Ulrich@feddit.org 11 months ago
Nope, Briar has one as well.
shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
Possibly. Briar is mobile only as far as i know
big_slap@lemmy.world 11 months ago
good luck trying to get family and friends on that lol
Ulrich@feddit.org 11 months ago
Discord is not really intended for “friends and families”, it’s for communities.
knightly@pawb.social 11 months ago
It’s not really for communities either, it’s for locking communities into a corporate platform.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 11 months ago
thats why right wingers love it over reddit, and facebook to. that way they can delete comments control things without having the discord admins hovering over them.
Ulrich@feddit.org 11 months ago
…so it’s not for communities, it’s for communities…?

My mother and sister is on my homeserver.
Also my SO.
And my every friend.
And we use Jitsi for calls during gaming or whatnot.
big_slap@lemmy.world 11 months ago
jitsi, interesting…
shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
Oh, i ditch family and friends who dont respect my personal data. Though its signal primary for me
big_slap@lemmy.world 11 months ago
yeah, I get it. I told people one year for my bday to download the app for me to get most of my circle on it. most did haha
mesamunefire@lemmy.world 11 months ago
All it took for me is discord going down for a couple hours a couple of weeks ago. Now about half my friends went to it. All it will take is a small push or down time and they will need their fix somehow lol.

Unfortunately there’s not really anything that comes close to Discord.
Revolt is the closest, as it’s open source and self-hostable but still lacks many of the features and isn’t federated.
executivechimp@discuss.tchncs.de 11 months ago
Everyone keeps recommending Revolt but I tried it last week and it’s janky as hell and the voice chat just straight up didn’t work. This wasn’t just me, too. Our whole group tried it and gave up.
Ulrich@feddit.org 11 months ago
Well that lines up with what I said.
Cethin@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
Element is almost identical.
element.io
Ulrich@feddit.org 11 months ago
Not even close.
Cethin@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
I only used it once a while ago. What doesn’t it do that Discord does that you also need?
