Sounds like there might be some sort of politics behind all this.
Like… most of the EU
If they weren’t considered a democracy, they’d be suspended from EU membership, but here we are… 👀

I don’t think so, the European Union is a famously apolitical organization.

Turkey isn’t part of the EU

Bruh, I swear I remember Turkey being in the EU. Feels like another “Mandela Effect”
Or was that because of the Finland Sweden NATO accention thing that I got the EU mixed up with NATO?
CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 1 week ago
Yes Turkey is in NATO and has been since the early fifties. That’s probably what you were remembering. Since most of the EU is also in NATO (if not all, I’m not gonna look it up) it’s a totally understandable brain glitch!

It’s been in talks forever it seems. The current authoritarian gov is actually a major hurdle for membership at the moment. They tried to leverage the whole Finalnd/Sweden NATO thing to become part of EU, but it didn’t work.

Yeah, I can understand that.
It’s like figuring out where Ireland is on Brexit, the UK, the British Isles, Britain, etc. It’s in half the groups Wales is in and half that it’s not.
