Neat, I can make some nice plastic cutlery with that filament!
- Comment on Is the saying, "The internet's written in ink, not pencil" accurate? 11 months ago:
I went looking for old forums I used to frequent, and while the site itself is on the internet archive most of the conversations are lost. Only one or two snapshots a year
- Comment on If so-called AI is basically just Large Language Models, how come predictive text on my phone is bollock-useless? 11 months ago:
Predictive text also can vectorize words, but the number of vectors per word are much, much simpler.
- Comment on why am I told that I'm a child on the internet?? I'm 20!! 11 months ago:
If you want to appear more mature, start capitalizing your sentences and using less exclamation points. Some are fine, but never more than one to a sentence.

Just from reading the title I was expecting a seasonal pumpkin spice WD40 joke
But this is also acceptable

The middle man is great if you want to ensure no action is ever taken

- Comment on when you drink pop or other sweet drinks do they taste sweet the whole time? 1 year ago:
It’s subtle, but yes it tastes “almost” sweet despite there being no sugar.
Do you drink sugary drinks or eat sugary foods on a regular basis? There is some research showing that excess sugar intake can drastically reduce your body’s ability to sense sweetness.
- Comment on when you drink pop or other sweet drinks do they taste sweet the whole time? 1 year ago:
Not sure if this is a joke, but yeah. For me, it’s got a bit of acid (from the carbonic acid byproduct of carbonation) and a subtle sweetness. Plus whatever flavoring they add
- Comment on when you drink pop or other sweet drinks do they taste sweet the whole time? 1 year ago:
This is normal. It’s also why, if you drink lots of sugary drinks, things like unsweetened tea or sparkling water (without sugar) become flavorless until you cut out the sugary drinks for a few weeks. Only after that will you begin to taste the natural flavors.

- Comment on Why do sports commentators talk soft bullshit? 1 year ago:
I’d still like the game sounds and referee calls, though
- Comment on Why do sports commentators talk soft bullshit? 1 year ago:
I would prefer the option to watch in silence (game sounds only), honestly. I love the experience of going to a game and I don’t need people telling me why plays are important or that a player just exceeded some random stat to enjoy it.
- Comment on Will it ever get to a point where data is so over-harvested that it starts to lose value? 1 year ago:
It mostly benefits the website that is being visited. If an ad company sells ad spots that don’t convert to sales, the organizations buying the ad spots will be less likely to buy them in the future, potentially hurting the ad company

- Comment on PostgreSQL 16 Released 1 year ago:
I’m the director of technology for a neurology lab, where we collect patient health record data in a variety of disparate machines and modalities (e.g., MRI, EEG, physical functioning, retinal scans, etc.). We’ve been using the open-source database software REDCap (basically a wrapper for MySQL that enables easy GUI-based data entry), but we are reaching the limits of what it can handle and need something that can scale with our growing database.
I have little experience in database management myself, but I am a competent programmer and feel comfortable learning whatever is needed (famous last words, I know).
- Comment on PostgreSQL 16 Released 1 year ago:
Can you elaborate? I’m deciding on what type of SQL to use for my lab and am thinking about MySQL. Should we reconsider?
- Comment on How do email scammers spoof my email? 1 year ago:
It’s not a possibility at all unless the “hacker” is extremely stupid.
If you have access to an account, you generally don’t want to make the owner of the account suspect that it is compromised.
- Comment on Are smart door locks more or less secure than traditional door locks? 1 year ago:
My door lock is a smart lock but I disabled all ability to unlock it remotely with an air gap. It gives me the ability to use the keypad to lock/unlock without any security holes added.
My smart home system knows it’s state too, so I can have it make a chime or alarm if the door is unlocked at certain times. Great for alerting us that our toddler is playing with the door again.
- Comment on How would you explain the need for three writing systems in Japanese to a person who only has had experience with one? 1 year ago:
Upper and lower case are part of the same written language and serve distinct purposes (emphasis, indicating proper nouns and beginnings of sentences, etc)
Hiragana and katakana are more distinct

Our ancestors didn’t get by without fire, if you mean ancestors as in members of our species.
We’re human because fire allowed us to grow our brains larger than typically possible. Protohumans discovered how to use fire long before we existed.
- Comment on Are there any recurring charges (or other downsides) that come with having a driver's license but not owning a car or regularly driving? 1 year ago:
Household doesn’t include roommates. That only applies to families.
- Comment on Small children are well known to be afraid of voids (closets, under the bed) in their sleeping area. Knowing this, why don't we design children's rooms to eliminate them? 1 year ago:
That’s great that it worked for you, but I won’t be doing that with my kids. Statistically, there was always the chance you lose a finger or hand from sticking it where it didn’t belong. And while yes, it’s unlikely, it doesn’t really matter anymore how likely it is once it actually happens.
