- Comment on What's your financial cutoff point on game collecting? 4 months ago:
Tough one - I don’t have a hard cutoff, but I’ve certainly started to slow down on buying retro games. I’ve spent over $200 CAD on a single game in recent memory (2022?), nowadays I wouldn’t really want to go over $100 CAD.
I’ve also been reevaluating and selling off some of my collection whenever I can buy ports / digital versions of some games (eg: Chrono Trigger, bought on Steam and sold my loose SNES cart, Xenogears bought on PS3 and sold my CIB copy, etc).
I only focus on two retro systems - SNES and PS1 - and I don’t really play on OG hardware anyways (Super Nt / Pocket for SNES, PS3 / Vita for PS1), so I don’t mind “owning” digital and ultimately downloading roms if necessary. - Comment on Handheld Linux Retrogaming recommendation? 4 months ago:
I guess the main question is where do you draw the line for “somewhat newer stuff”? 5th gen consoles only (and then which one) or even newer?
And what screen size are you looking for? - Comment on Saturn Radiant Silvergun Just Got A Major Fan-Made Update | Time Extension 4 months ago:
This is awesome. Radiant Silvergun isn’t my most played shmup to date but it’s definitely so so unique, I really enjoy it.
I certainly think romhacks/patches are a major benefit to older gen titles and I’m somewhat concerned we’ll lose that with newer gens. - Comment on Shoot em ups & run n' guns 5 months ago:
Shmups, I’m only a beginner but I have a few suggestions:
- ESP Ra.De. - somewhat slower bullet hell with pretty interesting scoring, the “Psi” re-release has a lot of useful QoL features.
- Espgaluda II - you could think of it as a successor to the former, it has refined gameplay and recent releases have great QoL features. Somewhat faster paced bullet hell?
- Ikaruga / Radiant Silvergun - Although these are two very different games, they have entirely different mechanisms to most other shmups. Ikaruga feels like a “puzzle” game a lot of the time, while Radiant Silvergun has some light RPG elements. Both are somewhat hard to get into imo.
- Dodonpachi Resurrection - great starting point re bullet hells, the recent re-release offers a ton of QoL features and the game itself has interesting scoring / gameplay. Soundtrack is awesome.
- Raiden IV - Super biased, but I love the soundstrack. Pretty great, if simple, game otherwise.
I have many more shmups in my backlog (Ketsui, Dodonpachi Daioujou, Battle Garegga, Rolling Gunner, etc) which I’m sure I could recommend, but seeing as I haven’t played then first hand… I’ll leave it there for now.
- Comment on You Can Now Jailbreak A PS4 With An LG TV 5 months ago:
Maybe? You would need to know rooting a TV is even a possibility in the first place, I had no idea that was the case and I’ve had my LG TV for over 4 years.
I’m just pointing out some specifics of the prerequisites, which the article did a pretty bad job of highlighting imo, and how this is not the miraculous solution it’s somewhat touted to be. - Comment on You Can Now Jailbreak A PS4 With An LG TV 5 months ago:
Not to be a Debby Downer, but you’d either need a LG TV which is already rooted, or one you can root (per the repo’s README, “RootMyTV is unlikely to work on firmware released since mid-2022” and given firmware downgrades are impossible…).
AFAIK firmware updates are opt-out by default, so as long as you connect your LG TV to internet, you’re likely to have received one, but I could be wrong. - Submitted 6 months ago to games@lemmy.world | 3 comments
- Comment on Older patient gamers: what is your preferred gaming platform? 6 months ago:
I used to be like you OP, PC-only gamer for a long while, but as I’m getting older (and got back into gaming a few years ago), I’ve mostly been using consoles or equivalents:
- PS5 40% of the time
- Xbox Series X 20%
- Steam Deck 20%
- Switch 10%
- Super Nt / PS3 / Analogue Pocket / Miyoo Mini Plus / 3DS / Vita, remaining 10%
- Comment on Play GB games 7 months ago:
You’re absolutely right, only the AGS 101 is backlit, my mistake!
- Comment on Play GB games 7 months ago:
Many options exist, depending on your budget:
- IPS screen mod for your GB, these are usually not too costly iirc ($60 USD?)
- GBA or GBA SP, you’ll get a backlit screen as well (around the same budget?)
- Open source cartreader to dump your carts and saves (and play ROMs wherever you want) - no idea about the budget tbh
- Analogue Pocket, it’s great but very likely overkill if all you want to do is play some GB games ($220 USD)
- Depending on how comfortable you are with downloading ROMs (and how ethical you feel that is, given you already have the games), you could just do that without spending a penny since GB games have been preserved and are easily accessible.
There’s also a handful of other options (GameCube GB Player, SNES Super GameBoy, etc), but that’s likely more consoles and accessories for you to purchase so I didn’t mention those in detail.
- Comment on Sony Reportedly Pauses PlayStation VR2 Production to Clear Backlog of Unsold Units 8 months ago:
NB: Careful, that reporter has apparently been wrong on a number of accounts regarding Sony’s PlayStation business in the past, eg:
- Sony: "We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5"
- Sony: “We have not cut PSVR 2 production numbers”
I wouldn’t take this article too seriously / as gospel (although PSVR2 has probably not been selling like hot cakes).
- Comment on Looking for emotional game recommendations 8 months ago:
I would wholeheartedly recommend the A Plague Tale duology (Innocence and Requiem). They both had a lasting impact on me (especially Requiem) and the OSTs are the overall presentation is really great IMO.
- Comment on What are the best Samurai period games? 8 months ago:
I’m not saying the combat is straight up bad, but throughout my 6-7hrs with the game (so far), it was definitely its most underwhelming aspect IMO.
I have to give it another go, but Sekiro’s was definitely more fun (or at least rewarding), while Ghost of Tsushima’s felt tedious. Maybe it just didn’t “click” for me though. - Comment on Alan Wake II free trial for PS5... 9 months ago:
It used to be that the timer started as soon as you hit download, however they supposedly fixed it later on to only start whenever you booted up the game (and stop as soon as you fully quit it).
I guess there might be some bugs / potential rollback on that fix, but since it’s never been officially communicated AFAIK… - Submitted 9 months ago to games@lemmy.world | 1 comment
- Comment on EXCLUSIVE | Microsoft plans Starfield launch for PlayStation 5 - XboxEra 9 months ago:
I think it’s fair to see the Xbox as a Game Pass box in the short to mid-term, yes. Microsoft’s efforts have been focused on getting everyone on Game Pass, be it Xbox, PC or Mobile (and they would love for other console manufacturers to have it as well).
They are selling Xbox consoles at a loss and are only recouping money on games and Game Pass subscriptions, now that neither Nintendo nor Sony is onboard with bringing the latter to their ecosystem, might as well port their first-party games to competing platforms to make more money. - Comment on My Phantasy Star Online dilemma 9 months ago:
Assuming it’s nothing to do with your Dreamcast’s laser (in which case you might need to adjust it to get it going, but realistically replace it altogether), have you looked into getting the disc itself resurfaced?
If this hasn’t been done before, this would likely be the first thing to attempt before considering getting a new copy tbh. Many local game shops still have the machines for it and can do that for very little money. - Comment on What's your favorite game you played this year? (Doesn't have to be released this year ) 10 months ago:
A Plague Tale: Requiem.
To be fair, 2023 was the year I played the most games I’d consider masterpieces, so the list goes on, but Requiem got up there immediately as my favourite ever and it’s been “living in my head rent-free” ever since.
- Comment on Everdrive Black Friday Sale Starts Tomorrow 11 months ago:
From everdrivestore.com, “What is an Everdrive?”:
An Everdrive is a flash cartridge that allows you to play games on your console. The cartridge is easy to use. You “drag and drop” files from your computer onto a * micro SD card that you insert into the Everdrive. When you turn on your console, a list of games will appear. With your controller, you select the title, and you’re done!
- Comment on What Better Game To Test The Dock 1 year ago:
Yeah, I’ve learnt my lesson, haha, although I picked up a Pocket much for the same reason as you did (and OpenFPGA cores were barely getting talked about then, so I didn’t have that many expectations in that regard) and my Super Nt has honestly been perfectly fine.
Cheers for the heads-up, I’ve been watching quite a few restoration videos on OG Xboxes and I’ve seen what those damned clock capacitors can do…
I’m actually leaning towards getting a 360, since it seems to have pretty good backwards compatibility, but most importantly (to me) the shmup catalogue is incredible on there.
Emulation is good enough, but my only PC is a Steam Deck, so that doesn’t really cut it for Xbox and 360 atm. - Comment on What Better Game To Test The Dock 1 year ago:
Yeah, it’s pretty clear the Dock is only made for 16:9 displays, unfortunately :/
I’m not extremely hopeful Analogue will patch in enough features/fixes to make it absolutely worth it, as they don’t have a great track record with their “accessories” (the under-saturation of the DAC’s Composite/S-Video output not being directly fixed after so many years does not make me hopeful tbh).Really nice setup :) I’ve been looking at the OG Xbox from afar, as the Series X is my first Xbox, so I have much to catch up on, but I’m really happy with the - admittedly very incomplete - backwards compatibility so far.
- Comment on What Better Game To Test The Dock 1 year ago:
How have you been liking the dock so far? I’ve been pretty hesitant to pull the trigger on it given its price (or rather given shipping and duties/taxes to add on top, hu).
(Also, interesting way to stand up the - I’m guessing modded? - OG Xbox vertically, haha)
