Fun fact, Caesar salad is named after the guy who invented it, an Italian living in Mexico at the time.

- Comment on Docker - what use is it? 7 months ago:
I could go in-depth, but really, the best way I can describe my docker usage is as a simple and agnostic service manager. Let me explain.
Docker is a container system. A container is essentially an operating system installation in a box. It’s not really a full installation, but it’s close enough that understanding it like that is fine.
So what the service devs do is build a container (operating system image) with their service and all the required dependencies - and essentially nothing else (in order to keep the image as small as possible). A user can then use Docker to run this image on their system and have a running service in just a few terminal commands. It works the same across all distributions. So I can install whatever distro I need on the server for whatever purpose and not have to worry that it won’t run my Docker services. This also means I can test services locally on my desktop without messing with my server environment. If it works on my local Docker, it will work on my server Docker.
There are a lot of other uses for it, like isolated development environments and testing applications using other Linux distro libraries, to name a couple, but again, I personally mostly just use it as a simple service manager.

KotOR’s console controls can be a bit awkward at times. I haven’t played it on Switch, but I originally played it when it released on the OG Xbox. I assume the control scheme is similar. And the graphics are going to be dated, but that’s a given for a game from '03. But other than that, I’m sure it’ll be a fantastic experience, especially for a die-hard Star Wars fan. It’s still my top game of all time, and if you can play it on PC with some graphical enhancement mods, it still holds up really well nowadays.
- Comment on Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection used modder's work without credit 7 months ago:
Aspyr’s KotOR port was considered pretty good, I believe. I was disappointed in their Civilization series ports for Linux because their netcode was incompatible with the Windows versions, which is baffling to me, considering Linux users are already siloed so much in other ways. But the games ran okay, so it wasn’t all bad.
But yeah, I haven’t really heard any good updates or news come out of Aspyr for a while. If I recall correctly, they were the original devs for the KotOR remake, which was going to be their first game from the ground up from a technical perspective. But they had that taken away from them after working on it for a year or two, which is crazy. It must’ve truly been awful.
- Comment on Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection used modder's work without credit 7 months ago:
Aspyr has a history of laziness and incompetence, unfortunately. I really want to like the company because they were one of the few companies bringing my favorite games to Linux (KotOR and the Civ series) before Steam and Proton go so damn good. But their Civ ports were always plagued with weird bugs not in the original games, not to mention they didn’t have cross-platform multiplayer, preventing me from playing online with my Windows-using friends unless I dual-booted or tried to fight Wine. And somehow their Civ save file format is different, so you couldn’t even switch between Windows and Linux and continue the same game. It was baffling.

The company behind KotOR’s mobile, Linux, and modern ports. Bioware was behind the original KotOR, and they were bought and ruined by EA.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
Maybe I should’ve worded my original comment better, because I never said we should just accept it. I explicitly think we shouldn’t accept it by refusing to do business at places that push tipping instead of paying their staff proper wages.
Probably should’ve led with that.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
I’m not pushing the responsibility anywhere. If anything, I think it’s the government’s responsibility to take the tipping loophole out of minimum wage laws.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
Thanks for the clarification. I sometimes get tunnel vision and forget people live in places with different laws and regulations. Yes, I’m specifically talking about US states where it’s legal to pay a waiter $2.13 an hour because tips make up the rest of federal minimum wage.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
Ah, that makes sense, thanks.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
I’m not contradicting myself. All of my points can coexist.
- If you don’t want to tip, fine, stop tipping.
- If you go out to eat, tip your staff.
- If you want the tipping culture to change, stop going out.
You’re correct, a tip is not guaranteed income, that’s the entire problem. I don’t understand why what I’m saying is so hard to understand. The company will only make up for lost tips for a waiter for so long before they’re fired. Continuing to go out to eat and then not tipping changes nothing, it just makes the waitstaff’s lives harder.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
No, but it makes tipping a necessity if you go out. My stance on this is that if you want to enact change, stop eating out. Continuing to eat out but then not tipping doesn’t do anything except shortchange the wait staff. The company still gets your money.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
Visiting Japan was incredible, every price was transparent and you paid exactly what the menu said. Wish we could get that going here.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
I agree with you, actually. If you don’t want to tip, fine, don’t tip. But don’t go to a restaurant and then not tip, either, because not only are you still giving the company money, you’re shortchanging the actual person you want to help.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 8 months ago:
Listen, I hate the tipping culture here just as much as everybody else, but the fact is, if you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to go out. Should employees get a decent wage without it, absolutely yes. But they don’t right now, and you not tipping isn’t going to change that.
- Comment on Mozilla lays off 60 people, wants to build AI into Firefox 8 months ago:
Yeah, it’s a hate-train for AI, I definitely get it, but Mozilla seems to be using it for actually useful things. Offline translation and fake reviewing checking for Amazon are pretty cool, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not brand loyal, and I’m ready to jump ship to a FLOSS alternative as soon as they do something stupid. I’ll just keep using Firefox until they do.
- Comment on Need help understanding how to get around port-forwarding with tailscale 9 months ago:
My ISP says my IP is technically dynamic, but it hasn’t changed once in the 6 years I’ve had their service. But that’s for the best, since they’re the only choice for symmetrical gigabit and their only option for static IPs is for business accounts.
So I continue to trust that they won’t change it. Fingers crossed.

They probably should’ve disclosed that beforehand, or as part of the video, but anyone with any experience with AI (ChatGPT, Midjourney, etc) knew the voice was staged to make for a better presentation.
- Comment on Marvel’s Blade | Announcement Trailer 11 months ago:
Redfall was made by Arkane Austin, a different Arkane development team. Dishonored and Death Loop were made by Arkane Lyon, the same team doing Blade.
Now, you may be right that some of the devs behind Dishonored and Death Loop aren’t there anymore, but it would be for other reasons and nothing to do with Redfall. So in that light, I’m still hopeful Blade will live up to the hype.

Just finished Sea of Stars. A random indie game I saw that looked like it would tickle my nostalgia senses, and boy did it deliver. Managed to sneak its way into my top 10 games of all time, easy.
If you’re a fan of turn-based RPGs with action command mechanics (like Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi), old school isometric pixel graphics like Golden Sun or Breath of Fire, great characters, a solid plot, and good pacing, I urge you to pick this game up. There wasn’t ever really a moment where I didn’t want to keep playing.
It took me about 35 hours to finish the entire story and most side content. I estimate it would be probably another 10 hours to finish the rest of the side quests and get all the achievements.

Comment and post edits and deletes are federated. OP probably means account deletion. Currently, if you delete your Lemmy account, it does not federate, so your old comments and posts stick around on other instances, I believe even with your old username attached.

Depends on the state. For example, Texas does, but its neighbor Arkansas does not (last I checked).
