Switching to more private and less data hungry is a tough process. How private do you want to be? If you take it too far, you won’t have a cell phone or a bank account.
Carefully consider the changes you are willing make change. Start small, progress slowly. Don’t get discouraged and remember that total privacy doesn’t exist.
Start by swapping search engine, don’t use Google or Bing. That’s an easy goal that already makes a big difference. Use something like Duck duck go, Startpage or something like that.
Eventually move away from gmail. Get your own domain, create your own email address. Slowly migrate your important accounts to the new email. This can take time but it’s not hard and you just removed the 2 largest sources of data from Google.
Stop using Chrome, try Firefox. Personally recommend LibreWolf, a Firefox fork. At the very least move to Brave browser (but make sure you disable the crypto crap).
Eventually consider moving to Linux but don’t rush it. Study what apps you need, what alternatives are there in Linux. Expect a way worse user experience but a way way better ownership. Try in a VM or live environment before you even consider installing it.

Here they are discounted a lot, very often in the 40 euro range (new)
- Comment on Close call 2 months ago:
But 5 bucks discount is nothing, you can get so much better in other venues.

In Portugal we have a couple of these stores but I really don’t understand how they stay alive. I went there once with a sealed 60 euro, recent, game for a console I didn’t down. They offered me 15 euros and were selling used copies for 55 euros. Why on earth would I buy or sell for those prices?

Not the person you asked to but my gaming experience has been stellar. If you use Steam you don’t have to do anything, it all works out of the box. If you don’t play those multiplayer games with kernel level anti cheats you’ll be fine.
I was expecting a bad time and was extremely impressed. Gaming in Linux is amazing.

I don’t know too much about IoT but I wouldn’t linux runs the world in any of the other markets you mentioned.
I would say while technically Android uses a modified linux kernel, you can’t put it under the same umbrella.
Either way I don’t want to get too much into these technicalities. I was simply trying to say that Linux is king on servers, not really on the market where all this crazyness happened.
- Comment on An angry admin shares the CrowdStrike outage experience 3 months ago:
Just to clarify: the world runs in linux servers. The market share for the non-server market is abysmal.

You can enable Firefox sync in Librewolf, it works fine.

Isn’t proton photos built into their Proton Drive already? It’s implementation is… barebones… On Android but it works.
- Comment on Valve rumored to be working on Android emulator for Steam 4 months ago:
The main problem is the amount of REALLY bad games. It’s very hard to find decent games, most of them are intentionally unplayable garbage.

- Comment on [Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism? 6 months ago:
I don’t know how you read my comment and concluded that I approve racism or homofobia. It’s these kind of comments that push people away.
Vegan and non vegans are are at the opposite extremes. One only eats meat, the other never eats meat. You can’t insult people into your way. No one wants to have a conversation with you when you just randomly accuse them of homofobia. In your future attempt try going easier and with baby steps. People are more likely to stop eating meat if they take it one step at a time. This ridiculous expectation that someone must change their lifestyle over night or they’re racists… This isn’t the way, statistically speaking. But alas, this is a pointless discussion because you already know and just to fight with a stranger. Have a nice day.

This is not how you get people to join your ideas, this is how you push them away further.

Here in Portugal the lowest is 8gb. The 500 euro models have 16gb already.

Just use proton VPN, the free tier should be enough.
- Comment on Sustaining Proton’s mission over time | Proton 8 months ago:
Turns out the problem is that Proton does not support IPV6, at least via OpenVPN and/or WireGuard. Disabling ipv6 fixes the problem, though I don’t really enjoy that solution :|
- Comment on Sustaining Proton’s mission over time | Proton 8 months ago:
I love Proton and what they stand for but their Linux support is unfortunately quite bad. Everything feels half baked, at most.

I tried their OpenVPN config files but I always get IP leaks. Any idea on how to fix that? :(

It’s not free, at least not in Portugal. You pay an yearly tax per vehicle, the value depends on the vehicle model.

- Comment on Why do some websites have a "Continue Reading" button? 9 months ago:
The cost of making a new request for the rest of the news is higher than just returning the full news. The only use case where this makes sense is where news are behind a paywall and you just want to show a teaser to Anonymous readers.

Firefox on Android allows you to install uBlock Origin. That alone is a major improvement over Chrome.
You can also try out Vivaldi, which is based on Chrome and also has a built in ad blocker. I don’t think you can install uBlock Origin on Android tho…

Our automation tests run on Firefox on odd days and on Chrome on even days. I don’t think it ever made a difference, tho. It’s getting harder to create bugs that are specific to Firefox or Chrome. Safari, on the other hand, is a fucking mess.

Try the startpage search engine. It has been much better for me than DDG.
Firefox allows you to select a home page, tho? Not sure what your problem with Firefox is.

That reminds me, I do own a pine64 device! It was the first thing I got on Kickstarter.
It’s a Pine A64, with 2gb RAM. I wonder if it has enough power to run all those things. It’s a budget device from 8 years ago, probably gonna have a hard time but I’ll give it a try if I manage to find it!
