Unfortunately this tends to apply to most of the “I’m not but…” phrases that people say.

And if you really want even more barebones, you can just do
git init --bare
into a directory on your VPS, and thengit clone user@your.ip.here:path/to/the/directory
and use git as you would normally! - Comment on Nightmares are just your brain doing combat readiness drills 1 year ago:
I love that the brain still relies on real-life data on the world it creates
I’ve heard that the brain isn’t really capable of creating unique faces, so when you see people in a dream - even if they seem random to you, they’re probably just someone you saw in passing (on the streets, online, etc) which is interesting!
Realistically there isn’t a way to reliably test that theory, but it definitely makes sense to me at least.
- Comment on Fediverse blogging options 1 year ago:
I myself haven’t done any major blogging in a while (Last year I started one and just used Hugo as a static-site-generator so no ActivityPub integration, but also ended up not really posting much), but from what I’ve always heard about WordPress the major “selling” point would be its vast ecosystem of plugins and themes.
But that ecosystem is a double-edged sword, because there is tons of malware for WordPress that comes in the form of plugins (I know WP itself used to be exploited a lot in the past, not sure what its reputation on its own codebase is these days).
I’ve not ever seen WriteFreely before, but I doubt its ecosystem is anywhere the size of WP. Whether that’s a roadblocker is of course only a decision you can make.
I’m sorry that I didn’t have much more to offer as an answer, but hopefully it’s something at least!
- Comment on Microsoft is bringing AI characters to Xbox 1 year ago:
Oh man, please don’t remind me of that disappointment.
On the other hand, I felt like “Drivatars” from the Forza series were decent. They at the very least felt a bit better than the static randomly generated drivers. I’m sure others may have had different experiences though.
Guess we’ll see how it turns out though.

- Comment on Google will now make passkeys the default for personal accounts 1 year ago:
Interesting, I’ll probably just have to wait till either Bitwarden supports Passkeys, or wait till Firefox on Linux supports cross-device Passkeys (so, my phone for example) as yeah a 25 key limit is not likely to be worth purchasing an upgrade for just yet.
- Comment on Google will now make passkeys the default for personal accounts 1 year ago:
Google definitely supports passkeys, and they were one of the sites that did this. I’ve just replied to another comment regarding this. I wonder if the Yubikey 4 (I’m not sure how to tell which one I have, since they look about the same) just doesn’t support passkeys, which would be… unfortunate.
It’ll be even more unfortunate if there’s a weird mix of sites that support the Yubikey as a passkey and some only support it as a passkey. My Pixel is supported as a passkey, but Firefox on Linux doesn’t support this - only on Windows and macOS. I believe Chrome/Chromium does, which is equally as frustrating as my Yubikey possibly not supporting passkeys.
Strangely enough, Google lets me “add” my Yubikey as a passkey, but then does not let me sign in with it due to it not being “recognized”. If I remove it as a passkey, and only use it as a 2FA token, attempt to sign in and use the “Enter your password” option, it will then let me use the key after I’ve entered my password as a second factor.
So it seems Google has removed the error (or its not triggering anymore) as they will have been one of the first sites I tried to create a passkey for, but it still does not let you use it as a passkey.

I quite enjoyed it! It’s very similar to something like Lower Decks or The Orville. Not quite the same, but similar.
Season 2, the last season, ends on quite a bit of a cliffhanger though unfortunately.
- Comment on Google will now make passkeys the default for personal accounts 1 year ago:
I’m not sure if this is universal or specific to the last site I tried to use my Yubikey with as a passkey, but it only would allow it to be used as 2FA, not actual passwordless authentication.
I assume this is because Yubikeys don’t create a secret for each individual website I suppose? Not exactly sure about that one.

- Comment on Diablo® IV is coming to Steam 1 year ago:
This was somewhat done for Destiny 2, when they moved from Battle.net to Steam (so like the Bethesda situation mentioned in another reply). I’m sure it was a bit easier for them since the base game went F2P which obviously hasn’t happened here for Diablo 4, but all of my purchases/DLCs for the game were transferred over to the Steam equivalents.
I’d assume if they really wanted to, they could find a way to just give everyone who has it on BNet a key to the Steam version, but there’s no real incentive for them to do that.
- Comment on Can you filter out posts on Lemmy that are in languages other than one you speak? 1 year ago:
In your settings, you can set your preferred languages - since you’re on lemmy.world this link should take you there. You can hold control down to select multiple options if you’re on desktop (and mobile should have a selection box pop up).
Though be sure to keep “undetermined” enabled, otherwise a lot of stuff will vanish. Also note that this only works for posts/comments where people have actually selected the correct language (if someone posts something in German, but marks it as English for example, it will still pop up).
- Comment on Why shouldn’t I just give up on Lemmy? 1 year ago:
Seems like discussion of the version numbers is getting mixed up then. I just logged out of Liftoff and logged back in with zero issues on my instance running 0.18.5.
As you can see in the GitHub link I posted in my previous comment, there’s only one major commit difference between 0.18.4 and .5, which fixes deletions not propagating correctly through Federation when an admin deletes a post who wasn’t a mod of the community (but still an admin of the community’s main instance) in question.
- Comment on Why shouldn’t I just give up on Lemmy? 1 year ago:
Not sure where the information about 0.18.5 having breaking changes came from. The 0.18.5 release is just the federated deletion fix that was cherry-picked in.
0.19 will definitely have breaking changes though, yes. In the admin matrix group there were quite a few people talking about accidentally leaving their instances on the
latest
docker tag which includes all of those breaking changes and no way to downgrade due to the DB structure changes. Maybe you’re hearing about it from them?I updated my instance to 0.18.5 yesterday and have no problems with any of the apps. Re-logged into Thunder and can see my communities just fine.

For me, it’s been Last Epoch which is an ARPG. It’s been doing a fantastic job of scratching the itch that Diablo 4 just failed to do.
I finally made it past the campaign and am in the endgame (as far as I understand), and I’ve had a good time trying to come up and play with various builds on my Runemaster character!
Also, American Truck Simulator for when I just want to turn my brain off and relax.
- Comment on Why, as a male, when emotionally do I only feel accepted by women but not by men? 1 year ago:
In my experience, this isn’t a gendered distinction - but rather just down to the individual person.
Some of my closest friends that are both men and women alike are friends I consider “letting my guard down” around. The same applies in the opposite direction, where I have friends (but generally more on the distant friend / acquaintance side) men and women alike that I have to be a bit more guarded around.
And while I can’t comment on this specifically because I of course don’t know you and as such have no frame of reference, from what I’ve experienced in the past and seen others go through, is that a lot of times it’s how you bring it up. If it seems more forceful, it’s going to have a higher chance to not land well with people (of any gender).

- Comment on Is there an alternative "lite" web front-end for Nextcloud? 1 year ago:
I’ve not heard of an alternative Web UI for Nextcloud - but I imagine your best bet would be to look for apps that can connect to the actual services being hosted by NC itself. So for example, using CalDav/CardDav to sync Calendar/Contacts/Tasks, etc. Unsure about the RSS Reader though because I’ve not used its RSS Reader, but I imagine there’s got to be something that can connect to it.
- Comment on Does "Selfhosted" mean you actually have a server at home? 1 year ago:
I do not think that self-hosting necessarily means that you have to host it at home. As others have pointed out, its more about hosting it on hardware you control.
I do think there is certainly a trust factor involved if you host stuff on hardware that you don’t own, but at the end of the day only you can deem whom you can trust. For example, I rent a couple of dedicated servers from a provider, but I also have a pretty good personal connection with the owner of that provider - so I have no concerns about the safety of my data. In general, I tend to just be pretty conscientious about what data is going to any server, and anything that I wouldn’t want falling into the wrong hands doesn’t leave my house unless I can guarantee its safety (with the likes of encryption and such).
I do also keep in mind that with the various providers out there, reputation is paramount to them (or at least, the good ones) so it is generally in their best interest to say, let someone walk into their datacenter and just start ripping the drives from your systems.
- Comment on What's your preference for a text chat server (e.g. IRC/XMPP/Matrix/Zulip/etc.)? 1 year ago:
Personally, its a combination of the following reasons:
-
I’m not held to another server, and self-hosting my own makes sure that whomever hosting the server doesn’t just close the doors one day and decide they’re no longer going to do so
-
I find it fun to setup my own services, like Matrix, Lemmy, Mastodon, etc
-
I control what servers are blocked / defederated from, from my knowledge though defederating on Matrix doesn’t happen nearly as often as it does for ActivityPub based platforms however.
-
I created Matrix accounts for some of my family members to communicate with, and if they lose the password I know that I can reset it for them rather than hoping they setup the account recovery info correctly.

I’m a big fan of Matrix, as it’s easily accessible from anywhere - plus I already have a server for it spun up going on two years now which makes it easier for me.
