Technically a vpn is a private company while ISPs I guess have less freedom over government request compliance. So a vpn would be slightly better but yes, very little added value if it’s one of the mainstream ones like nord or tunnelbear

Because streaming over tor is 1) painfully slow and 2) a dick move for the whole network that is very important to others.
VPN don’t give a crap about people pirating, and governments probably don’t as much as people think (I guess that depends heavily on your country), but if you really want to be safe, go for one of the logless vpn, like mullvad or ivpn.

They probably are, have you seen videos from western tourists in NK? They have super luxurious hotels costantly empty because there are at most a handful of people at one time. They really really want to be perceived as modern and civlized so they throw ludicrous amount of money to their ridicule tourism industry so they hope to attract foreigners. Of course this is done at the expense of their citizens

You said wise things, but I suggest considering expressing your wife these insecurities. Maybe that will help you come to terms with them and you can find some strategies so she can effectively reassure you.

It must be a windows professional things, because I had “reccomendations” of various things on the login screen and freaking candy crush saga ads in my start menu since Windows 10, which is one of the apps that kept reinstalling themselves with windows update, alongside OneDrive that I have to regularly uninstall.
When I had to install windows 11 using a local account was still allowed but now as far as I know it’s not unless you modify the installation image (and still, why the fuck should I be allowed not to use an online account?)
As for the games, yeah they work, but many work just fine if not even faster on wine. And if a game works better on another OS with a compatibility layer in the middle you know your OS is really bloated.
I’m probably a lot more picky about my software than most people are, but windows is seriously getting worse by the year, at least on the customization and usability.

Ok I seriously don’t get it. Windows is crap, for many reasons.
I get why microsoft doesn’t want you to have privacy, getting you data is good money, this is also why it’s full of ads. I also get it why they try and torce you to use a microsoft account and they try and force down your throat OneDrive and Cortana, it’s to make more money.
I can also get why they reduce the customization options, it’s to get you used to have no choice and I guess to reduce the features they have to maintain.
But then there are things so stuoid I really don’t get it, like this technical problem they absolutely have the means of fixing quickly and effectively. We arr talking about fucking Microsoft, the third or fourth richest company in the world that cannot ship a simple firmware upgrade. I can’t believe they are not able to, but it seems they really are so incompetent and take some unbelievable stupid decisions. Like the first version of Recall not being encrypted in the slightest way. How could they be so stupid to think that no ome would notice, instead of spending like 6 hours of a single developer to implement encryption on an OS that REQUIRES tpm hardware.
Sometimes it looks like Microsoft is begging their uses to switch to linux.

Try and ask her the real reason why she might be reluctant. “Because they’re muslim” is not a really strong argument; “because they are fundamentalist and they might extrange me as daughter or prevent me fron leaving the house if they found out” is a very practical explaination on this compromise she decided to take.
Families are complicated and sometimes shitty, but it’s her family and navigating around you and them could be difficult (she might love her parents and want to maintain a relationship with them, or she hates them but relies on their financial support, both options are valid)
