- Comment on YSK Your smoke detectors should be replaced every 7-10 years 3 days ago:
Yes.
Not only that, the current generation of smoke detectors have sealed batteries so you can’t even open them up to change batteries or anything. So once they expire in 10 years they start their incessant “I’m dying” non-stop beeping - that’s when you dispose of the entire smoke detector and buy a new one.
I’ve read that they don’t detect smoke as well after 10 years anyway (e.g. even more false alarms) so it’s probably for the best to get rid of old ones.
- Comment on Do smoke detectors have little speakers inside them? If yes, would it be possible to hack them to play a little jingle? 5 days ago:
I don’t have any answers - but now I wonder if your idea would be easier when working with one of the fancier smoke detectors with voice alerts. Those have pre-recorded voice alerts that “speak” when an alert occurs, rather than beeping. Those pre-recorded messages must be stored somewhere in the smoke detector.
- Comment on What do Computer power supply issues look like? 1 week ago:
With PSU issues your system wouldn’t be able to boot up. Or if there was some sort of load issue in the middle of usage you’d just see your computer turn off / restart.
What you’re describing is some sort of software or driver problem.
- Comment on Valve Acknowledges Steam Deck Shortages Due To Global Memory and Storage Issues 1 week ago:
Yup same here, my main system is a bit over 10 years old now but it was originally built all maxed out so it has lasted and worked great all this time. The GPU and had drives were the only thing I ever bothered swapping out during all that time.
But like you said, past 10 years and you start to wonder how much longer the system is going to run for. I’m hoping mine lasts long enough past the AI craze that I’ll be able to do a new build without the insane costs but who knows what the future will bring.
- Comment on Before social media/internet/cell phones/landlines/payphones; how would 2 friends living across the same city arrange in person meetings and stay in touch? 4 weeks ago:
If you’re going that far back means those two friends in the same city were probably going to church (or some other religious gathering) fairly regularly and would likely see each other fairly often. Enough to be able to make other plans during the week. And yes, can’t tell someone you’re running late or not showing up… if you’re late you’re late, if you don’t appear then that’ll be a conversation next time at church.
Beyond that since they’re in the same city those friends likely go to the same pub(s) or other places and see each other that way.
- Comment on How do I deliver an American eBay package to my hotel? 5 weeks ago:
You can have things shipped to yourself at the hotel, it’s actually quite common e.g.
Firstname Lastname (Guest) Fancy Hotel Name 123 This Street This City, State, Zip Code
That said it might be helpful to notify the front desk that you plan to receive package(s) during your stay in the case they set up a different procedure for that.
Also be aware sometimes you’ll just need to check in with the front desk or receiving department if there are any packages for you - More than a few receiving departments at hotels just don’t do the extra work to notify guests that packages arrived for them… this sometimes results in the guest checking out without ever knowing there was something waiting for them to pick up.
- Comment on YSK a US passport card costs $30 and is definitive proof of citizenship. It fits in your wallet like a credit card. 1 month ago:
Yup I was going to comment the same. The physical passport might be useful after the fact once you’re in ICE holding being processed after x amount of hours/days. But then again at that point they would look you up in their systems so having the physical passport in your wallet may end up being a waste of time anyway.
The fact is if the ICE goon squad you encounter feels like arresting and detaining US citizens they’re going to do it.
And that’s assuming the ICE goons don’t make up charges of assaulting them or similar, in which case I’m not sure if those US citizens being charged get released with a future court date or are detained indefinitely.
- Comment on Mount an ISO in Linux? 1 month ago:
The mount terminal command should work. But I’d expect you should be able to right-click an .iso file and mount it that way too. I’m not on Linux Mint but can confirm with GNOME on Debian it’s easy enough to right-click the .iso file and select “Open With Disk Image Mounter”, Cinnamon on Linux Mint should be able to do the same or similar.
Also keep mind you’re probably going to need to do more than just mount a .iso disc image if you want to play a old Windows game on Linux. There’s a few ways to go about that but I’m not too familiar on the best approach when you’re not running Windows games through Steam.
- Comment on I have seen a lot of movies where the Catholic School Nuns smack a students hand for being disruptive or something is this a trope or a real something? Like most notable in Blues Brothers 1 month ago:
Catholic schools in the 80’s did not have corporal punishment (certainly not the one I attended for a few years). I think that was something from an earlier time period.
- Comment on [deleted] 1 month ago:
Probably sick of social media. I have a few friend requests/message requests I never bothered accepting since I’m preparing to delete those social media accounts anyway.
- Comment on Is lemmy dying? 2 months ago:

- Comment on Where is modern Punk? 3 months ago:
Hans Gruber and the Die Hards
Got to see them when they did a tour playing with Escape From the Zoo, that show was wild.
- Comment on Where is modern Punk? 3 months ago:
Yup there’s already a pretty good list going in this post!
Not sure what to add, their sound is a bit different but I’ve been digging Playboy Manbaby and one of their newer songs Criminals definitely fits the post topic www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abj78ccwPbg they’re amazing live. Robbie also has a whole side project with Spaceman Bob, he’s going to be playing at the Leftover Crack show this weekend so that should be fun.
got into RATM around this time last year and nothing else has come close to scratching the itch of “maaaan fuck this shit.”
Coincidentally Tom Morello mentioned Kneecap earlier this year when talking about bands of the moment nme.com/…/tom-morello-hails-kneecap-as-the-rage-a… (around 20 mins in that interview).
- Comment on Where is modern Punk? 3 months ago:
Plenty of punk and punk adjacent music still around, lots of local shows still occur if you know where to look. I’m in the U.S. but can say for sure this stuff is still happening here and other countries too.
Bob Vylan and Kneecap were banned from the U.S. earlier this year and Zionists are still going around trying to get their shows cancelled just for speaking out on Palestine.
In general Zionists seem to be easily triggered, last year while on their tour playing a show in New Jersey Apes of the State had a big FREE PALESTINE banner at their shows and some guy at the venue flipped out and tried to take it down.
On tour last month in the U.S. Bad Cop/Bad Cop was selling FUCK ICE shirts while the other band on tour with them (The Iron Roses) were speaking out on LGBTQ issues and the general fucked state the U.S. is in right now.
Later this weekend Leftover Crack is playing a show in Brooklyn, I’m sure they’ll have plenty to say on the current state of things.
- Comment on Why do so many boomers and even some gen x believe so peristently that if you dressup and show up in person anywhere you will get whatever you went there for? 4 months ago:
Yeah I was going to say the same. Currently work at a small business run by a boomer so if the random person walking in looking for a job happens to catch him there’s a 50/50 chance that person will get hired. Bonus if the person looking for work has a degree from a ivy league university, boomers love that shit. I don’t know why someone with that sort of degree would be applying for a low wage small business job but the job market is a bit crazy nowadays.
The practice can backfire of course - I’ve seen the same boomer boss hire other boomers that barely know how to use a computer and then proceed to fail at his/her job spectacularly. It’s interesting when you run into boomers looking for work and it turns out they spent most of their career relying on others to deal with the mundane tasks of dealing with email, spreadsheets, etc. So many of them spent their careers falling upwards into management roles until they were laid off/fired/whatever.
- Comment on Why are fruits and berries healthy, even though they are mostly just sugar? 4 months ago:
A nutritionist will be better able to explain this but I’ll give it a try :)
You’re maybe overthinking the sugar part of the equation. Berries/fruits contain natural sugar that is a part of the fruit itself. Your body processes that differently since that sugar comes integrated with other nutrients (fiber, Vitamin C, antioxidants, etc.). And you typically won’t want to eat say a few buckets of berries in one sitting to equal the same sugar high you get in a processed sugar, all that fiber will feel much heavier and your body is just going to tell you to slow down on its own.
The much worse types of sugars are added sugars e.g. sugars that were processed and now exist separately, then re-added into something else. Take your berry example, process all the sugar out of them so only the sugar exists, then you add those sugars to some other food you wanted to sweeten. Now your body won’t absorb that as a natural sugar complete with the other nutrients the berry used to have… you’re only getting the bad without anything useful. So you can gobble a whole ton more of those added sugars to get your sugar high without your body getting any indicators to hey, slow down, maybe it’s time to stop eating these added sugars.
- Comment on Is anyone NOT steaming their Music? 4 months ago:
Never paid for streaming. Usually buy music and download the files to play on my computer or stream them from the computer to my phone or wherever. Mainly have been buying lossless .flac music files from Bandcamp.
- Comment on Is Star Trek Discovery that bad? 5 months ago:
I liked it though it did feel that the series had a tenancy to take itself maybe too seriously. Trek is best when it knows when to keep things on the lighter side and/or create ongoing gags and themes to call back to during the series. Discovery didn’t really feel like it had much of that.
Despite that it was still a good watch IMO. Burnham tended to be at the center of the series the other characters do get interesting when they got more time during the series. You should just give it a watch and decide for yourself.
Also if you want to know the backstory of Star Trek Strange New Worlds you’ll want to watch at least some Discovery, SNW is a spin-off.
And giving credit where it’s due, Discovery was the first of what became a whole bunch of new Trek shows that came out afterwards. If Discovery was that bad then none of the other newer Trek shows would have even made it to air. Before Discovery it had been a while since any new Trek shows had appeared, at some point the Star Trek universe needs new blood to keep things going. Else it’s just going to be older people talking about the original Star Trek series and TNG and it’ll just be something that used to exist a long time ago.
- Comment on Why do i tip my bartender $2 per drink and per bar food order but 20% when I order food from a waitress? Am I tipping wrong? 6 months ago:
With tips I generally do 20% across the board so a bartender would get 20% just like a waitress. And it’s better to have a happy bartender :)
That said I’m also in the northeast U.S. where everything is expensive so it sort of makes sense that the tips aren’t going to be cheap. Maybe I’d rethink the tipping if I was somewhere else less expensive.
- Comment on [deleted] 6 months ago:
In the U.S. older people still get by fine without all this stuff. I have family that still has a landline, nothing else, so I guess maybe that’s #3 in your list. It does mean they physically have to go to places to get things done (e.g. physically go to a bank).
Older people don’t care as much about social life beyond visiting/seeing the people/relatives they’ve always been seeing. A smartphone isn’t required for that.
- Comment on I resigned to my last job and now I need to talk to my former boss to get the job back. Any recommendations? 6 months ago:
I’ve returned back to an old job but I had left on good terms, and in fact my old boss ended up wanting to keep me around as a freelancer… eventually when my newer job wound down and I needed something more permanent it just kind of made sense to go back to the old job where the boss there still wanted me around anyway.
So when it is on good terms it’s easy. In your case it doesn’t sound like you left on great terms, and it is quite possible your former boss is going to give a bad recommendation on having the company allow you to come back. Personally I might consider that a burned bridge at this point, but hey anything can happen so all you can do is give it a go. My suggestion is to talk to your former boss and just accept blame for whatever they want to throw at you, and hope they at least give a neutral recommendation on you coming back to the company. In the end you’ll have a different boss anyway so coming in it’s a new start for you.
- Comment on Is it worth selling on eBay in 2025? 6 months ago:
In the U.S. at least around me people tend to use Facebook or the Nextdoor app for selling or getting rid of things locally. I don’t like either app but that seems to be what the general public is into at the moment.
Haven’t touched Ebay in ~ 15 years or so and don’t plan to go back to that mess. Last I used it PayPal decided to lock my account in the middle of doing a few buy/sells on Ebay causing both my Ebay rating to tank and losing PayPal in the process. Back then Ebay was so integrated with PayPal that it was hard to do anything there without PayPal so I happily ditched both of them.
- Comment on Mastercard release a statement about game stores, payment processors and adult content 6 months ago:
Yup, most times when a business gets set up for accepting credit card payments they need to set up a bank, merchant account, gateway, those things integrate with the CC companies. Often they aren’t even the same company so you’re kind of dealing with a bunch of different entities. I’m not sure if I missed any other middlemen.
Though I’ll say lately the new thing is for the POS system / website / whatever to sell you the merchant account/gateway under their own systems so everything besides the bank and credit card companies are integrated through them (& they collect more money).
- Comment on Does anyone use a phone without a protective case? 8 months ago:
I actually kind of like that it’s a bit slippery, makes it easy to slide into my pocket. A case would just feel too bulky and and would need more force to get in/out of my jean pockets (IMO).
Regrettably, despite having a case, I managed to crack the screen anyway. It fell face down onto a pointy rock. My first broken screen, ever.
Oof yeah I sympathize :) My previous Pixel had a screen protector on it and I still managed to crack the screen by dropping the phone on a corner and getting a nice little corner crack. After that I figured why keep bothering with these protectors haha.
- Comment on Does anyone use a phone without a protective case? 8 months ago:
Most people I know have cases on their phones, yeah.
But in case it is helpful my own phone (Pixel 7) has no case/screen protector. Also my phone has cracks on the back and one corner so this tracks :P
- Comment on New Game Concept: JuryNow – Get a Verdict from 12 Real People in 3 Minutes 9 months ago:
Opt-in might work. But thinking more about it, not sure if it would be too much of a headache to manage… I’d think you may end up having to moderate what actually shows up publicly on the site else you end up with the sorts of questions/answers that the other commenter mentioned.
- Comment on New Game Concept: JuryNow – Get a Verdict from 12 Real People in 3 Minutes 9 months ago:
That’s fair, LOL.
- Comment on New Game Concept: JuryNow – Get a Verdict from 12 Real People in 3 Minutes 9 months ago:
So does it ever tell you what the jury verdict is? I’ve done like 12 answers and there’s no visible confirmation that there were other people answering the same question let alone what the final verdict was. Kind of kills the vibe, was hoping I’d at least see what the other random anonymous jurors responded to the same question(s).
Also would be more interesting if the site would publicly show the questions/verdicts as they come in.
- Comment on will i fit in more with china/japan or russia or their communities in terms of acceptance/blending in? 9 months ago:
Not a part of either community but I’d guess russian would be easier, assuming you’ve actually spent time to immerse yourself in russian culture/language/etc. Then again if you grew up with the general american upbringing and culture you may as well hang out with whoever you want, there’s no need to specifically search out a group of people if your life has been american culture up to now.
For what it’s worth back in my college days my old roommate was half black half korean. He really, really wanted to blend in with the koreans and other asians at the school but truth is most of the foreign students tended to avoid him. The asians that did hang around with him were the type that wanted to meet and hang out with americans and weren’t being picky about culture and whatnot.
- Comment on How important is it that cans are clean when i put them in the recycling. 10 months ago:
Not sure if you meant like cleaning them all out with the dishes using soap/sponges/etc. Just rinsing them out is fine IMO.
But either option is better than just dumping dirty cans/bottles into your recycling pile. I had a friend who was living in a shared apartment with 3-4 other people and there was this one guy that never ever cleaned or rinsed any of his recycling. Apparently the shared kitchen area where the recycling was stored would reek and attract flies and other insects all because of that guy.
