I’m really looking forward to this one. I adore the manga and seeing the pure, concentrated weirdness of these two in anime form will be great.

It’s stuck way down at the bottom, but the ActivityPub Fuzzer project looks really interesting. I have accounts across so many different fediverse platforms just for testing piefed interoperability and it is kind of annoying. Being able to simulate different kinds of activities from a range of platforms without doing so would be a game changer for interop testing.
Looking forward to the public release @darius@friend.camp

More people need to make use of the curation tools available to them in my opinion. Too often I see people browsing /all and then complain about seeing tons of stuff that they don’t like. There are tools that are available to them to help them create a more pleasant experience that they just aren’t using. The fediverse doesn’t have some algorithm that learns the type of content that you most often engage with and feed it to you, you have to more proactively do the curation yourself.
Just as an example, I was in a conversation with one of the lemmy.world admins a while back. We were talking about instance blocks and how infrequently users actually use them. Across all of the users on lemmy.world, only about 700 of them actually created an instance block for the most-blocked instance (lemmynsfw). Only two instances had more than 500 users block it.

I liked this series quite a bit. The ending was rushed for sure. It is clear that the axe came way before the author had gotten to where they wanted, but I still had fun.

Riko is going to be hitting up Mama Misaki for skincare notes if she is that easy to mistake for Misaki herself.

In Skavau’s defense, they aren’t a programmer, but are probably one of the most active people on piefed’s chat server/matrix room as well as the codeberg repo providing ideas and feedback. So they are volunteering time that way (in addition to being site staff for piefed.social).
Some of the ideas in this post are good imo, but are currently not possible yet using the piefed api due to it being much less complete compared to lemmy’s. So, it helps us figure out prioritization on what kinds of endpoints would be useful to flesh out next.
- Comment on [Meta] Proposal regarding post tags for c/anime and c/manga 3 weeks ago:
The post flair situation on piefed.social is a bit of a transient one. I had originally made the flairs as a bit of an experiment to see how the piefed/lemmy interop worked with them. The tl;dr is that it is pretty janky at the moment because lemmy will forward flair information in some cases and not in others. This should all be improved once lemmy 1.0 comes out. When that happens, the post flair will be created/standardized on the lemmy side since that is the community’s home instance.
Technical Details
As a community moderator, I am able to create post flair for the communtiy on piefed.social. However, when doing so, the post flair information is just silently dropped by the ani.social instance because lemmy doesn’t know what it means.
However, if I (or somebody else) make a post from my piefed.social account, lemmy will dutifully forward that post’s json out to all the other instances, even including the post flair information. This is the only way that post flair can currently federate out to other piefed instances. Then, users on remote piefed instances can only use the flair that has been federated out in this way.
It’s still unclear if lemmy will support all the features in their post flair system that piefed does (spoiler blurring, colors, etc.). So, when 1.0 is closer to release, the post flair will probably be changed to some degree.

I was really happy to have something cheery and well-executed to turn towards with all the darkness in the world these days.
This is exactly what I wanted out of City and it delivered completely. I often will turn on an episode or two of Nichijou when I feel like shutting off the world a bit. I foresee myself doing the same with City in the future now as well. This was also my AOTS.

I can’t wait for the movie.
Same!
I was also surprised at how much I liked the show. I had somehow managed to avoid spoiling the cold open to episode 1 for myself and found myself cracking up during the first OP. I am never not impressed by Kotaro and the voice acting performance by Mamoru Miyano. His lectures at the chalkboard totally give off the feeling that the director basically just told him to let it rip and the rest of the show just tries to keep up.

About Mushishi - I will preface this by saying that I love the heck out of the show. I actually agree with your point #2. I think Gingko feels like the average person wouldn’t understand mushi or would just be frightened of something they couldn’t see, even if they understood it better. However, I agree with you that he could have at least tried more.
Related to that, I think your fourth point is related to something that I found interesting in that the preventative measures in the setting of Mushishi often took the form of superstition or local myth. Things like don’t cross this mountain after dark or don’t store food in this building that are just common knowledge among the locals, but they don’t really understand why. Well, it turns out that the actual why is often because otherwise you will interact with mushi in a bad way. It reminds me of how religions basically created supernatural origins and explanations for physical phenomena that were not understood at the time.
I think your points 1 and 3 are intentional elements of the setting. I think the author just wanted to slowly wander around through this world and take it in. To a large degree, that is all that Gingko is doing through the story. There are some episodes where he is traveling to a place for a stated purpose, but more often than not, he just happens to be passing through for no particular reason that we know of.

As somebody that has made contributions to improve the PWA responsiveness, the difference between touch and cursor controls can be tough sometimes. The css framework we use (bootstrap) generally handles it well, but the pop-ups are one area where I’m not really happy with it, but I don’t have a better solution yet.

I just want to point out here that this blog post is old at this point (published January 2024). I believe that mbin in particular has made improvements in this regard. Also, we have added some features to piefed, and introduced a little bit of new Javascript/css. I am not sure exactly how this would compare today.

Piefed has an open issue to look at improvements to the ranking/scoring algorithms. So, we are open to improvements on that end if there are suggestions.

TIL that rimu added instance chooser endpoints. I'll take a look at those before 1.2 gets shipped. Same with the topic and feed endpoints. The easiest time to make changes to them is now before they get more widely used.
I have about 10 more endpoints (working through
/userright now) I have finished transitioning in a dev branch right now, so we are making progress. - Comment on Piefed now has a built-in alternative to Lemmyverse to discover active communities, with the "Active people" filter on the communities page (weekly basis) 1 month ago:
Like Blaze mentioned, the api is a bit of a work in progress and we are revamping the swagger. The version of the api spec you have there (freamon's) is manually created and can have some inaccuracies because of that. We are in the process of making the piefed api self-documenting so that inputs/outputs are validated against the schema, but there are a lot of endpoints still to go in that effort.
Some of those revamped endpoints are going to be coming in the 1.2 release. For the self-documented endpoints that have been done so far, you can check the swagger on crust (the dev instance running right off the main branch).
To keep up with this effort as I am working through it, I have been making posts to !piefed_api@piefed.social.
On a personal note, I would kill for a pythorhead-but-for-piefed to exist. I pretty extensively use pythorhead in my lemmy communities now, so I am hopeful that we can get the api in a stable enough state to enable tools like this to exist in the near future.
- Comment on NSFW on Lemmy 2 months ago:
I mean...that doesn't really seem that bad? Also, asking for the whole community to be nsfw is a wild overreaction looking at the other pictures in the community.
If you browse the all feed, expect to see some things you don't like/enjoy. It's a fire hose of content by design. Learn to curate your subscribed feed and stick to it. Frankly, lemmy doesn't have great filters/blocks to do what you want, and expecting the whole rest of the internet to abide by such strict standards of nsfw isn't going to happen.

Still lots of things to do :)
Lemmy has been at it for years at this point while piefed only started up a bit over a year ago I think? In any case, I have only been a contributor for maybe a couple weeks, so lots of catching up to do!

tl;dr - it's an issue with the pillow image library in python. It's on our radar though. I got posts working, but you have to click through, the thumbnail still isn't animated.
