If I were a Gnosia and there’s a doctor onboard, I’d totally claim to be an engineer and betray one of my teammates. That’s an easy way to get at least one human on my side.
Also, it looks like the amnesiac premise is conveniently being ignored for quite a number of episodes. I bet that Yuri’s amnesia is going to be relevant to the plot later, probably as part of a big reveal.

Hibike Euphonium. Violet Evergarden
I can second both of these.
I didn’t recommend them earlier because I remember them most for their peak animation and story instead of beautiful scenery, but I won’t be surprised if they are extremely good-looking in terms of background art too.

One that I’ve watched very recently that I can recommend for its beauty is Dragonite and the Postman. It’s only 12 minutes long, so it is very easy to pick up. Note that Pokemon is a kids show, so don’t expect some profound story.
Also, can’t go wrong with Your Name and the likes.

This is just a set-up episode for the upcoming Arima Kinen but they still managed to turn up the drama to eleven and made it so tense.

Dang, this show never get stale. Just as things were settling into a routine, they switched it up. I guess it’s the start of the Gnosia campaign (i.e. Yuri starts “playing” as Gnosia)?

I completed two great anime last week.
The first was Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26. This kind of anime is perfect for me: short, episodic, self-contained and bizarre. It has a bit of everything, from comedy and wholesome moments to action-filled sequences and emotional scenes.
I enjoyed it a lot, enough to give it at least a 9 / 10.
The second one that I checked out is My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. Season 2 is coming out next anime season, so I thought I’d give season 1 a shot. And boy was I pleasantly surprised.
If we ever get some side story where we follow some random C-class heroes from One Punch Man, this is it. This differentiation from the usual formula of following some big shot superhuman, and instead focusing on the not-so-glorious but still heroic moments of your everyday dude, makes for a story that stood out.
Another comparison that I can draw it to is Spiderman. I believe one aspect of Spiderman that everyone loves is that “friendly, neighbourhood” part. You don’t need to save the day like Superman; just small acts of kindness to make everyone’s day better. The MC embodies this and IMO this is what makes him endearing.
Speaking of Western comic superheroes, I like how the animation / art-style used is derived from the Western style which is certainly not a frequent occurrence in anime. It reminds me of the Spiderverse movies (though Spiderverse’s production value is on another level).
All in all, this is a heartfelt superhero anime. I like the characters and I like where the story is going. I would definitely be checking season 2 out when it gets released. Minimum 8 / 10.

Can’t be an umamusume anime without some depression eh?
Anyway, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to the banner this week.
Oguri Derp:
Oguri Squish:
Chiyono O and Ardan squishing Oguri’s cheeks
Feels meme-worthy but I don’t know how to describe it:
What the heck are you talking about, Roppei?!
Fourth-wall break: This isn’t an anime or manga.
Even the intermission goes hard:
I like that little detail of Oguri holding onto that hand-sewn plush that Kitahara Jo made for her. It looks so cool, but is simultaneously so sweet.
This is an exception but I think this shot deserves to be the episode banner even though it’s not even a scene in the anime proper.

It’s like a whodunnit, so I find it pretty engaging.
- Comment on [Episode] Gnosia - Episode 7 discussion 2 weeks ago:
I remember reading somewhere that what makes zombie apocalypse stories captivating is that they are less about fighting the zombies, and more about the interpersonal relationships and drama within a band of survivors. It looks like Gnosia is heading in this direction, which would keep things interesting.
Also, this has to be the easiest round for the humans yet, with one dumb and one selfless Gnosia.

Peak episode. I like this one as much as Loid’s backstory.
Also, the political situation hits too close to home.

Emotional, yes.
Payoff? IMO, not really.
- Comment on [Rec] Anime with great emotional payoff 2 weeks ago:
I’d say stories where the main character(s) persevered through great struggles and got rewarded at the end have the best emotional payoff.
Some that I would recommend (that you haven’t complete) are:
- Umamusume - season 2 (IMO it’s possible to follow the plot even if you skip season 1)
- Gundam: Witch from Mercury

SAO
(I know)
Just own it bro.
At this point, SAO is overhated. Yes, some parts of the story is mediocre, but you see mediocrity in many other shows and yet they don’t receive the same level of vitriol.
And its peaks are strong enough to contend with other top-tier anime.

If I am the author, I would subvert expectations by having Heeko win this next round. Maybe with a fourth wall break referencing the readers’ expectations.
The way things played out, you don’t need to be Mirai to see that Heeko is going to lose, leading up to a showdown between Mirai and the final boss. Otherwise, it doesn’t fit the tournament parody.

I read The Story of How My Wife’s Mood Changes the Weather. It’s a very standard romcom where the girl can’t be honest with her romantic feelings but would show uncontrolled signs of it.
It’s no different from any other manga of this trope, but it’s fun to read something like this every once is a while.

Past Seasons
Been watching plenty of Pokemon. Their production quality is top-notched.
Hisuian Snow - Reminds me of How To Train Your Dragon, but somehow I couldn’t really get into it. Perhaps it’s because the protagonist didn’t have enough interaction with Zorua / Zoruak. 7 / 10
Twilight Wings - Apparently it serves as backstory for one of the latest gen games or something, but I did not play them so I didn’t get any of the references or easter eggs. Still a wholesome watch though. 8 / 10
Paldean Winds - This one felt like it has more of an overarching plot compared to Twilight Wings. I enjoyed it more. 9 / 10
Dragonite and the Postman - This right here is my favourite of the lot. I like this story most - perhaps because the stakes here are higher (but tbf it’s low across the board). The visuals are stunning. I also find it cool how they change from modern artstyle to an older-looking one during flashbacks. Instant 10 / 10
With good Pokemon anime turned out to be, I thought I’d check Pokemon: Horizons out. But it has 100+ episodes, so looks like I won’t be touching it for a while.

I prefer exciting moments (e.g. fight scenes) to have explosive music that hypes me up. Land of the Lustrous’ soundtracks for such moments are kinda chill. I can sense that they are going for the tense vibes, but I’d rather something hyped.
I think the soundtracks for slice-of-life moments (e.g. the ones that MentalEdge shared) are ok. However, I don’t pay as much attention - and hence give less weightage - to the SOL music.

Past Seasons
Watched / caught up to two anime last week.
The first was Poketoon.
WIP
The second was Land of the Lustrous.
I find the story intriguing; I was very curious about the events that led up to the story. Obviously there’s some kind of conspiracy, which makes its hook even stronger.
The fight scenes remind me of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which I don’t see often (which makes it stands out in a way).
IMO it’s rather lackluster in the music department though. I barely noticed any soundtrack, and when I do, they don’t seem to fit the scene.
I find it a pity that the anime ended just as it was about to pop off. The way it ended makes it a prologue to the main story / arcs.
It doesn’t look like the rest of the story is getting adapted, so looks like I’ve got to pick up the manga.
8 / 10

I see the studio spent the one-week break cooking, because this was a 3 Michelin stars episode.
I (and most people probably) guessed the outcome of the race based on the ending of last episode, so I was more focused on the hype moments. And did they deliver with the hype moments.
Sucks for Tony Bin / Bianca to get injured, but I wonder if the sabbatical in Japan is what led to them siring future racehorses in Japan.
These non-Japanese horses add so much to the story. Cygames really got to adapt them in Umamusume.

Songs
From the shows I am following this season, nothing really stood out TBH.
Some parts of the following songs are kinda catchy, but they are not strong enough as a whole for me to add them to my playlist:
- Reincarnation (OP) from Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?!
- Spurt Syndromer (OP) from Umamusume: Cinderella Gray - part 2
- Disguise (OP) from Gnosia
This Season
I picked up Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?!. This is slop, but it is so entertaining.
Despite being slop, IMO the characters are not braindead. Characters behaved and reacted to the various situations with common sense for the most parts. I also like how it is not an isekai. Too many of such stories are needlessly isekai when they could have simply be fantasies like this one.
I don’t see it being a frontrunner this season, but it’s good enough for me to not drop it.
Past Seasons
I completed the rest of Yuru Camp season 1. It is pretty cute and comfy. Nothing is happening, since it leans hard into the slice-of-life, but the comedic moments are funny enough to keep my attention. I’d give it an 8 / 10
