I don’t get it. What’s the reference here?
I recognised TM Opera O though.

Asahi Production produced an anime adaptation in January 2024 with three versions ranging from censored to completely uncensored—TV, Gushing, and Ultra-Gushing modes
TIL they have 3 levels of censorship.

I gave Gachiakuta a shot. It’s decent, but 6 episodes in, I don’t see how its story is different from most battle shounens. A predictable plot becomes boring to me, so I dropped it before it reached the point of boredom.
I am still continuing my watchthrough of Mushishi. I have completed season 2.
There’s finally someone who can truly be considered a “villain” / criminal:
Mushihi spoiler
the many generations of gardeners who maintain the Sakura tree. I’m surprised it took so long for someone to uncover their murders.
Also, I forgot to mention it last time, but it feels like Mushishi’s author got some inspiration from floaters.

I think this is one of the isekai characters who reveal that they are not from that world.
The other one I can recall off the top of my head is
spoiler for another series
Kazuma from Konosuba, pretty late in the novel.
It’s just so rare, and the fact that they came from another world is usually irrelevant to the plot, that the story could as well be a standard fantasy story.
So I like it when authors make the transmigration plot-relevant.

Stream of throughts:
I like how we’ve got a race that showcased March, instead of fully relegating her to a side character.
Sakura Chiyono O and Mejiro Arden at the gym
I don’t do benchpresses at the gym. Anyone knows / is able to guess how heavy those weights are?
Looks like Super Creek is being set-up to be a future rival. I bet next episode would have her beating Dicta Striker in the mile race.

The first half is anime original, right?
I don’t remember seeing it in the manga. The second half corresponds to chapter 60.
Anyway, the excavator fight scene was so stupid; I love it.

This is pretty tame chapter IMO.
With a new girlfriend around the corner, any guesses as to what characteristics she would have?
I have 3, based on why she’d be in the infirmary:
guesses
1. she is the school nurse or some other figure responsible for the students’ health 2. she is injured or ill, and came to the infirmary for help 3. she is not actually ill, but is in the infirmary for some other reason School nurse is the most obvious one, since it has been foreshadowed in the kiss zombie arc. However, I struggle to think of a quirk for her. Perhaps she leads a very unhealthy lifestyle despite advocating for a healthy one, but that sounds too similar to Momoha. Perhaps it’s a fellow student who’s tired of the actual nurse not being around, and decided to stand-in for her? Having an injured or sick student as the new girlfriend could serve as a small twist given the expectations for a school nurse girlfriend. The range of available quirks is wider too. It could be anything, so given how popular Umamusume is currently, I’m going to take a wild guess and say it’s a girl who enjoys running while wearing horse-based accessories, but fractured her leg doing so. For the last option, for the new girlfriend to visit the infirmary despite not being sick, an easy reason / quirk is that the girlfriend is a hypochondriac.
I bet the author would still find a way to subvert expectations, but it’s always fun to theorycraft.

Umamusume S1
very bright
kinda cloyingly positive
IMO season 1 of Umamusume has the most cheery, CGDCT tone. The rest of them leans a lot harder into drama.

- Comment on Summer Anime Season Wrap-up and Discussion Thread 1 week ago:
the preventative measures in the setting of Mushishi often took the form of superstition or local myth. Things like don’t cross this mountain after dark or don’t store food in this building that are just common knowledge among the locals, but they don’t really understand why. Well, it turns out that the actual why is often because otherwise you will interact with mushi in a bad way. It reminds me of how religions basically created supernatural origins and explanations for physical phenomena that were not understood at the time.
Exactly my thoughts, though I forgot to mention it in my original comment. Thanks for pointing it out / reminding me.

This Season
Completed
Top Tier (>= 9 / 10)
The Summer Hikaru Died - This is easily my anime-of-the-season. This is the kind of suspense anime that I’m looking for, where bits and pieces of clues are presented to us so that we can play detective, but enough information is withheld to create the mystery. 10 / 10
There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless… - I enjoy entertaining cheap drama like these. The middle was kind of weak, but the start and end were strong and left a strong impression. I believe this is the second harem (read: polyamorous) anime that I would consider top-tier in entertainment value, the other one being 100 Girlfriends. The rest that I have tried are too braindead for me to even enjoy. 9 / 10
Great (8 / 10)
Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus - The first half was honestly pretty weak; I was on the verge of dropping it. But when the second half starts, that’s when it drew me back in. I am glad I did not abandon it. It is definitely a drop from previous seasons and is not as strong a suspense anime as The Summer Hikaru Died.
Grand Blue Dreaming season 2 - This is good ol’ turn-your-brain-off dumb fun. Just like in season 1, despite acting “dumb” most of the time, the characters are not braindead. There is in fact character development and progress in relationships.
bâan: The Boundary of Adulthood - I enjoyed it quite a bit. I like the concept of cultural exchange with residents of a different world. I think the story / world has the potential be expanded upon and be turned into a full season of anime. I can’t help but think the setting is unrealistic though. If humans discover another world and is able to establish a reliable connection to it, I bet it won’t used for cultural exchange, but for an invasion to seize their resources - like in Avatar (the blue alien one).
Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express - It’s a fun watch. The way the characters speak made them feel so real. Just like bâan, I think it has the potential to be turned into a proper season of anime with full 24 minutes episodes.
Good Enough (7 / 10)
My Dress-Up Darling season 2 - It was pretty good until the very last part of the last episode. There was essentially no progress made in this season. However, I still enjoyed how educational the show was when it comes to cosplaying. Also, I suspect a significant number of the animators cosplay, or can at least relate to this show. I can see that this anime was produced with the utmost love.
Dropped

What I like about suspense series like this is all the conspiracy theories you can come up with.
Here’s another easy one:
The founding members - or least, the old members - of the shady corporation that sunglasses dude belongs were responsible for the mass killings and dismemberments back in the days.
After that period of bloodshed, the organisation survived instead of getting dissolved, but now has a fresh face: a modern company that “investigates” the occult.

It’s not everyday we see partners getting introduced to parents in romcoms.
I like how real Momoha’s parents’ reaction was.
