- Comment on Does the AGPL license allows not disclosing the source of third party scripts indirectly interacting with the main software? 3 days ago:
This is a question about what constitutes a derivative work. IANAL and that’s a difficult question most of the time. I’m not going to try to answer it. I’m reasonably sure that the last 3 are not derivative works, but again, IANAL.
If something is a derivative work of an AGPL-licensed product, that work must also be AGPL. This basically means you must provide source to anyone who has a copy of the binary or any user of the software. If only you are using the script, it’s a pretty trivial case. You’re the only author/user of the software and you have the source so you’re in compliance.
- Comment on Why is "mythology" in the public domain in the first place? 6 days ago:
Yes. OP could make up a new story based on mythology and it’s not in the public domain.
The Church of Scientology is well-known to aggressively assert their copyright interest in some of their religious texts. At some point these will lapse into the public domain and anyone who has a copy can publish them.
- Comment on For some reason suicide is illegal. If someone is going or trying to commit suicide and get talked down are they still in trouble or get locked up or sent to a medical facility? 1 week ago:
I was in a combined depression and substance abuse unit. It was mostly boring. We had privacy when in the shower or the can. Doors had to be open when we were sleeping. Law enforcement wasn’t involved at all. It was a private hospital, not state-run. I wouldn’t ever want to go back but AFAICT it was pretty good as far as mental hospitals go.

Not great but better. There will always be bad days.
We thought I lost my cat and I was only a few months from being inpatient the first time. So I took a knife, turned off my phone, got in my car and started driving to where I was going to kill myself. After about 30 minutes I thought better of it and pulled over and called my wife. She already had local PD there. I talked to them while they had the county sheriff come get me. They held me until my wife cane and got me. Then back into inpatient I went.

The police released me into the custody of my wife. They did pat me down and put me in the back of a cruiser so I wouldn’t hurt myself.

Legal in Oregon! You need a lot of paperwork, but if you’re terminal it can be done.
- Comment on What are the easiest types of internet videos to make that are not slop? 1 week ago:
Somewhat seriously…porn.
But completely seriously, the easiest videos to make are a matter of pointing a camera at yourself and talking.

Criminally underrated comment.
- Comment on YSK that Gerrymandering allows politicians to choose their own voters. In many countries, it's illegal. Gerrymandering is common in the United States 2 weeks ago:
Yes. There should be no gerrymandering. However, you can’t have one party unilaterally disarm while the other one keeps doing it.

Because if you have the power to make it illegal, by definition, the old system worked for you (you won), so why would you change it?
It’s cynical as all hell, but that’s how it works.

Actually I already own that one but I wanted my post to be brief.

I’m not really interested in these games but this is pretty freaking awesome.
- Comment on How abnormal is it for a mother to be her son a fleshlight for his 18th birthday? 3 weeks ago:
Abnormal meaning “not normal?” Very abnormal. As others have mentioned there are some edge cases where this isn’t terrible, but in general it’s a pretty bad look.

As an American, I’m worried that Starmer’s legacy is going to be giving you PM Nigel Farage.
- Comment on Hypothetically, if the police seized your electronics (for an unrelated investigation) and found out you have a lot of pirated content, what would happen? 3 weeks ago:
As far as the US is concerned (because a lot of this stuff does depend on jurisdiction), you’re most likely going to be raided by a state-level police department (local PD, county sheriff, etc). They don’t give a hoot about pirated material because that’s a federal crime.
If you were raided by the FBI, ATF, DEA, etc., they could use any pirated content they found to bring up criminal charges against you.
There are four essential elements to a charge of criminal copyright infringement. In order to sustain a conviction under section 506(a), the government must demonstrate: (1) that a valid copyright; (2) was infringed by the defendant; (3) willfully; and (4) for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain.

- Comment on What is piefed? 4 weeks ago:
It is similar to Lemmy in that it’s also a link aggregation platform. What makes it different is that it is created by different people using different code and has different priorities. But the same basic features are present.
I can’t speak to why it might be better than Lemmy because I don’t use it. Maybe some people think it’s better because of the features it offers. Maybe others don’t like the Lemmy devs and prefer supporting a different application. There are lots of possible reasons.

- Comment on Would you take a short term job(1-2 months) over a local longer term that makes nearly 8months worth of salary?? 1 month ago:
Best wishes! I hope it works out. If I was the employer and you were a good worker, I’d want to retain you rather than lose you forever and then spend the time looking for a new hire and training them.
- Comment on Would you take a short term job(1-2 months) over a local longer term that makes nearly 8months worth of salary?? 1 month ago:
This sounds like OP has a full time position somewhere and is thinking of quitting to go work as a contractor. My guess is that he’s unemployed after 2 months and would need to find a new job.
My general feeling on this is that it’s fine if they understand the difference. I don’t know of they’re in the US or elsewhere, but in the US the taxes on 1199 contractors are pretty high and there are no benefits. This can heavily change the calculus.
I would see if my current employer would allow me to take a 2 month leave of absence and then come back.

We’re talking about “I am a prominent member of an organization designated by the US as a terrorist organization.”
Either way I misunderstood OP’s question and my post wasn’t on-topic.

Yes. If you’re a rando, sorry you’re just not that interesting.
If you’re someone the US considers an actual threat, then yeah don’t buy anything from the US (use a 3rd party). But if you’re that big of a threat you already know that.

Could be a British/American English thing. We (Americans) say “learned”, they will often say “learnt.”

- Comment on WTF is a rural town in the USA? 2 months ago:
Colloquially, it just means a small municipality. A “rural town” is a small municipality that is not near a larger metro area.
Town has a specific meaning in some states. I’m from Ohio. There is no such legal meaning here. Any municipality over 5k residents is a city. Anything other than that is a village. I am from a city with a population of about 6k. Outside of the city limits is farmland. I would say I’m from a small town/rural area.

None, because they don’t exist.
