One suggestion is to look at getting any useful docker container up and running first to get a feel for it, then pivot towards heavier lifts. Self-hosting emails is going to be a headache as others have said, and monero nodes sounds like it could be a technical as well but that’s admittedly an uneducated guess.
You can look at the recent selfh.st poll for the most popular docker containers, see if any strike your interest and start there.

I agree 100%. Liberals retweeting how Elon is losing money is actually making him money

There’s an irony seeing Redditors creating threads and complaining about it as if they did anything during the API-gate saga
- Comment on Smart TVs take snapshots of what you watch multiple times per second 1 month ago:
OTA antennae for sports.
For streamling, I usually watch it on my laptop so that I can have easier options to skip and replay.
My desktop is connected via HDMI so I have that as an option but I rarely take advantage of it

Earlier this month I finally disconnected the wifi for my 7 year old Roku TV. I miss being able to turn it on w/ voice activation but I’ll trade that in for my privacy

- Comment on ClamAV setup 1 month ago:
I use it. I think it was a hardening recommendation from lynis IIRC.
I definitely experienced a lot more freezing on my laptop after installing it (it’s a memory hog) so I upped my swap and things are back to normal.
- Comment on Mozilla launches privacy friendly AI addon called "Orbit" 1 month ago:
Probably not for me as I’m not interested in a summarizing tool, but I’m not against AI in general.
OAN, I think over time, the community will see that AI was a bubble, but in the same way that the internet was a bubble back in the day.

Probably because you can pay for a month and download all the wallpapers and cancel.

Their current userbase is not their target userbase. They are trying to reach a more mainstream audience but all of their attempts to monetize are seen as useless by their current userbase.
They want to increase revenue w/ ads - A loud swath of FF users are tech savvy and have adblocking enabled They want to pivot towards AI - A loud swath of FF users see AI as gimmicky

RIP. Was on firefish a few months but saw the writing on the wall back then and jumped ship. In retrospect, probably the 3rd or 4th federated product I’ve been a user of that flamed out. WATTBA

Do it!

I made the transition last summer and there was definitely growing pains. Over time it will become second nature like everything else. The advice I would give would be to be patient and accept that you have used a different operating system probably for over a decade, so there will be a learning curve initially.
Also, artificial intelligence models (especially Claude) are very useful for troubleshooting.
- Comment on 1000+ Firefox for Android extensions now available – Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog 6 months ago:
If you are self hosting front end alternatives like teddit or nitter, libredirect is a great tool. Now, even when I browse the internet on my tablet, the extension will redirect to my server instance instead

💀 at making it a men’s rights issue.
From my perspective, it’s toxic to always get your audience worked up over minute things. That kind of content is what I tried to avoid hence my move to Lemmy

Gotcha. I almost exclusively ride on a bike path so it doesn’t quite fit my needs, but I’ll keep an eye out for them regardless

When cycling, did you find that they worked as good as or better than noise canceling earbuds to reduce wind?
- Comment on [deleted] 7 months ago:
Try reading the actual article. I use Firefox (via floorp) but came away with the perspective that wasn’t as nefarious as I expected. I don’t trust Google it won’t be switching back to Chrome anytime soon but the criticisms seem a bit premature given the article’s arguments
- Comment on We are in Brave's search results! 8 months ago:
I am self hosting my version so that is where my screenshot came from.
If I were looking for a public instance to use that has this functionality, I’d look to some of the European hosts as they are less likely to use Reddit as their de facto platform relative to Americans

SearXNG has a the same functionality as well for free: Image
You can self-host it or use one of the publicly available instances.

- Comment on How do I automount sshfs? 8 months ago:
I run Debian 12 and ran into similar issues trying to mount NFS, even down to having to use an alternative console to log in and undo f stab edits
My solution was simple and so hopefully it helps you as well. In fstab, the backslashes don’t cancel out spaces. Since my directory path had a space in it, that would break fstab:
Path/to/your/Video\ Files
breaks fstabPath/to/your/VideoFiles

Definitely feels reminiscent of the"Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party" joke. They’ve been increasingly antagonistic towards their own customers regarding the efficiency of search and numerous other pipelines. It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that they are also being dicks to their own employees

That was my sentiment exactly. What’s the point of fixing a device if the replacement part is marked up excessively. Feels like bad faith actors

Same. Slickdeals and forget it. The website is a bit of a privacy nightmare w/ inserted tracking/referral links for every deal though. I’ve stopped logging in entirely and just use it for emailed alerts.
