- Comment on a 320 year old elf marries an 80 year old human: Is the elf robbing the cradle, or the grave? 6 hours ago:
Is 320 considered an adult for elf aging in this scenario?
- Comment on Why don't more filtering systems enable sorting by least viewed/visited, including for older pages/material? 2 days ago:
Because advertising and engagement. A lot of things like Facebook, Twitter and Google don’t want to have an optimal search result because it’s more profitable to them if you mouse over a few ads before you find what you’re looking for (in theory).

- Comment on Why do we associate reverby electric guitar with the ocean? 3 days ago:
It seems like some chord arrangement are natural (they were developed independently in different parts of the world and maybe be specifically well tuned to how our ears work) but pretty much everything else is cultural though sometimes you need to dig really deep to find the source of those cultural roots. Some are informed by animals but even those have mostly transitioned to cultural learnings - instruments associated with birds, horses, dogs may have some basis in their call but at this point they’re mostly spread by cultural learnings.
- Comment on Why Didn't Democrats Do More When They Controlled Both Houses of Legislature, The White House, and The Supreme Court During Obama's First Term? 3 days ago:
I’m not certain what your point is - we’re not talking about socialism here and that word is a misunderstood flashpoint to Americans. If you ask Americans if they want to live in a socialist country I wouldn’t be surprised if only 6% said yes - but when you describe Scandinavian democratic socialism purely by stating policy stances it tends to be pretty popular.

Filibustering is dumb and it shouldn’t exist - if we want the ability for a narrow minority to block law making we should just increase the threshold to pass laws - we shouldn’t allow a weird procedural rule to block discussion of a law whether through talking a long time or just doing so by email.
- Comment on Why Didn't Democrats Do More When They Controlled Both Houses of Legislature, The White House, and The Supreme Court During Obama's First Term? 3 days ago:
Democrats had the ability to change procedural rules and prevent filibustering - they chose not to.
Unfortunately, the lack of progress when Dems controlled all three branches is because conservative democrats didn’t want that progress. While Democrats controlled all three branches liberals did not.
- Comment on Why Didn't Democrats Do More When They Controlled Both Houses of Legislature, The White House, and The Supreme Court During Obama's First Term? 3 days ago:
Because while “Democrats” controlled everything, liberals didn’t. It’s extremely likely that if we get another chance at this the same thing will happen - progressive democrats will push for voting reform and better social safety nets while conservative democrats will block those efforts.
We need to make sure to primary shitty democrats.
- Comment on As someone who is aging. Late thirties. How can I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, particularly in music? 1 week ago:
If they enjoy the media won’t they just consume it? My music tastes cover several decades and while I don’t follow all modern music there are a few genres and artists that I seek out actively.

It was actually originally cooked by Boer settlers who named it after their homeland.

Oh yea, most definitely.
- Comment on If a man with multiple personalities becomes suicidal, would it be considered a hostage situation? 1 week ago:
If you’re seriously asking, I’d qualify that not as a stupid question but as flame bait.

- Comment on Why is currency so essential? 1 week ago:
Want, greed, hunger, sickness, lust… nearly every flaw and benefit has been translatable to currency at some point in history. I feel like you’re focused on the negative but, for instance, take my partner - they suffer from hypermobility and would be unable to build their own home (most of us would be unable arguably) currency allows us to make an exchange at the the absurd levels of value that equal a house without needing to shuffle around herds of thousands of cattle.
- Comment on Why is currency so essential? 1 week ago:
Lemmy supports editing posts, deleting posts and making new posts - if a question is obtuse the author can always take it down and post something more precise and less open to misinterpretation. Of it’s a language barrier issue I’m sympathetic but this just seems to have been a needlessly clickbaity title.
- Comment on Why is currency so essential? 1 week ago:
We had currency without credit scores for about three thousand years prior to the first credit score agency (1841 from what I found). Having credit score agencies is just a modern problem and their prevalence in the past fifty years is a demonstration of how shitty our capitalist system has gotten.

I’m also an American who moved to Canada - I did that because my wife lives up here but I’ve found it an extremely welcoming culture.
- Comment on American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse? 1 week ago:
Canada is a pretty good market for nurses.

- Comment on Will I ever be seen as truly British? 1 week ago:
Bigots don’t define labels - if you think you’re British you’re British enough for me.
I’m an immigrant as well (though the cultural differences between Canada and America are much less evident) and anyone who says I’m not Canadian can get fucking bent.

Yea uh… the goals are definitely fucking different. Let’s not fall back into that old rhetorical trap of being fair and balanced.

Hey we wouldn’t be nearly as smug if these fuckers weren’t throwing their votes at a known grifter and a dog murderer. Back when it was W in charge we could actually talk about issues - now these fuckers jumped the shark.
- Comment on How do people actually dumpster dive to get free food? Are there any other cheap/free ways like this to get food? 1 week ago:
Talk to a local restaurant if you’ve got any and ask for help - if they’re not an ass they might be able to hook you up with food that’s reasonably safe to eat.
Good dumpster diving usually involves getting it before its in a dumpster.

- Comment on All cheap smartphones have a fingerprint sensor but all laptops dont have one. Why? 2 weeks ago:
Most phones auto-lock after <1 minute while laptops tend to go unlocked for hours at a time so laptops don’t need to compromise on their security.
Fingerprint sensors are awful for security.
