- Comment on Memory is overrated 1 year ago:
Some IDEs (like Netbeans, Intellij, PhpStorm) can rename only in the scope of the selected item. So if you used variable “a” in 2 methods, it would only rename in the selected method and it understands the variable is different from “ab” and won’t replace the “a” part of that.
- Comment on Memory is overrated 1 year ago:
The trick is to name everything in a way so you don’t have to remember stuff. Like instead of class “Cronjob” method “process”, name it “ImageCacheEraser” and “purgeByContentID”. Same goes for variables. No need for short names. Nowadays, you can even write with short names at first, so typing is faster, then just use your IDE to rename them to full size afterwards.

If you want to keep case sensitive completion, you can symlink it. It’s your home dir. Make yourself comfortable.

- Comment on Advice needed, son wants to learn how to program 1 year ago:
You could get a cheap Android phone or tablet and install MacroDroid or Automate. They allow making simple programs from building blocks. Like “If notification is ckicked display message”. … but theres theres the risk this somehow leads to wanting to use the internet/wifi.
Unfortunately Lego Mindstorms have been discontinued AFAIK. It were components to build a robot that could be programmed from a PC. That would have been cool. I think one of the programming softwares was also for Mac. Maybe you can get it second hand?

From my experience in multiple companies I’d say about half of programmers are married.
- Comment on Having separate dongles for network, audio, video etc. is even worse than just having specific cables for each 1 year ago:
Image If you don’t have a dongle, the dongle is basically just hidden inside (a chip on the main board or an extension card). Being able to add dongles is a very easy way to quickly add things like wifi. Otherwise you’d have to open the PC and mount a card and the number of slots inside is also limited. So yeah, builtin is good, but also no, dongles can be better. It’s just a different option.
- Comment on How to remove google bar 1 year ago:
on a very old phone (years ago) i was able to disable a google app in the settings and instead of the google bar it woukd show “Widget not found” or so. Later, I added a widget from a totally different app to my home screen and it would put a copy where the google bar was.

yes, but it’s unfortunately much less exciting, because it’s very easy and just works.

- Comment on Why do apps reload constantly? 1 year ago:
do you have developer options on? i vaguely remember a setting like “don’t keep activities” (Activities are basically app windows on Android)
- Comment on Why do apps reload constantly? 1 year ago:
for me, just uber does this. i assume it’s some sort of crash or bad coding practices, but it barely matters with uber. no other app does it on my phone.
however, maybe long press on the apps icon, go to App Info -> Battery. Thebshould be a switch to allow it to run in background, as well as Optimize Battery Usage -> Select “All” and search for it.

i don’t know much about 3D printing, but it looks like a bit of fine sand paper and then ironing again could fix it.

it’s different in this case. twitter is nothing without users. oil companies don’t just sell car fuel. they also sell oil for plastics, lubricants, fuel for ships and heating, etc… twitter would die. oil companies would survive.

slight misunderstanding: the ban on bringing cars is “racist” as it prevents them from racing 😆
- Comment on [deleted] 1 year ago:
yes, there’s a github instance list, which is one of the top google result and it says “It doesn’t matter which instance you use” in bold, but that’s not true:
- 2 instances i joined ceased to exist after < 1 month
- 1 had the hardest captcha on earth and it just stopped showing after the 3rd try and the register form would no longer work without it
- some need you to fill out an application message and don’t say what you’re supposed to put in. then a person needs to manually approve you based on that. that mechanism is not pleasant for everyone

it would be good, if subs had a further category tree. maybe multiple even. for example a “Manchester United” sub should have sport>soccer. so people interested in that can subscribe to either sport or soccer to get posts from it, as well as from similar subs, instead of having to find and subscribe hundreds individually. on the other hand, sports haters could block/filter all sports, or just soccer, if they are fed up with it, instead of having to block them all individually. i’m sure that would enhance usability and wouldn’t interfere with how lemmy is used right now. it would just be some extra help.
