I explained that the local area uses a gift economy and what that means.
I agree with Warlock here. Gift economy is a fun idea but the last thing I want to do is 5 different quests or “favors” every time I want to get some shopping done.
Obviously they’re an ass in your story but they were absolutely correct about that. Why not just have currency be some vague “good will” that’s semi-transferable between people but also allows gift/favors as a fallback.

What operating system and tools should a beginner use to learn programming
Chances are you’ll have to switch to whatever your job has eventually so just pick what you like. I really like VsCode personally because you can read the documentation of methods without leaving your program. The best system and tools is whatever gets you to start learning though.
I want start with python but I don’t know what operating system and tools to use
Python is great and easy to learn but I think it leads to misunderstandings about how programming languages work if that’s your only experience. If you can get a Programming Fund 1 class in C or C++, you can transfer over those skills to Python in a week. If you start with Python, then you’ll be mostly starting from scratch if you need to learn other languages. But it’s entirely your choice.
In terms of programming institutions (universities bootcamps, etc…), do each institutions have its own preference or does it let its student choose?
My university had Windows for the public computers but as long as you turned in your code it didn’t matter where it was written. I know lots of people who used a Linux VM that they carried on a USB stick. They completed their assignments just fine.

For personal preference, assuming I didn’t have to worry about getting a job, Lisp no question.
Otherwise, I’d have to go with C++.

I’ve been with hexbear since the days of r/chapotraphouse so I’ve seen the site at its best and worst.
The main issue imo is that hexbear has a very “vibe-based” culture. What is correct in any given post is less a question of truth and more a question of what the first few commenters opinions on the matter were. You can be flamed for opinions in one thread but then have those opinions widely accepted a week later because the vibe was different that day. Hexbear is far too focused on dunking libs that discussion becomes a way to blow off steam rather than actually understand something.
They’re still better imo than most of lemmy though. At least I don’t have to re-defend my first principles of “nazis bad” every post. But sometimes you do get flamed for reasonable opinions because the post had different vibes. You go to hexbear because you want to talk about politics but you stay because you find it cozy. Anyone who cares about the politics surrounding Hexbear is going to have a bad time.

Every one of you hexbear users AND users of remote instances who are here harrassing and arguing with OP about their views is doing just that. Dogpiling.
Realistically, how is one of the most active instances supposed to interact with any community without coming across as dogpiling? It can kinda work if you all share similar political viewpoints but when it comes to politics there is literally no way to avoid dogpiling by your definition.

Tell me if you figure it out. I want a hexbear account for the memes but I don’t actually want to deal with them.
