- Comment on OpenRA for classic RTS games like Red Alert has a new playtest with enhanced visuals, revamped map editor 4 hours ago:
Red Alert was my gateway drug to computer games, it’s so fun to see people still caring for it
- Comment on DOJ to ask judge to force Google to sell off Chrome, Bloomberg reports 2 days ago:
Lit. It’s a good ask although it’s not clear what separation means here. Not going to hold my breath, the big corpos seem to usually win these kind of games.
- Comment on First Look: Loops, by Pixelfed 2 days ago:
I wonder about this a lot. The little research I did suggested DigitalOcean is footing the bill for the moment (and also for Pixelfed? would love to hear more about this). Google, Facebook, TikTok, etc… have all managed to throw enough resources at similar products that people expect a level of performance that is very expensive to maintain. There is some serious hardware and distribution issues ($$$$) with trying to host an “instant and endless stream of short form video”.
In a counter point though I think large instances like lemmy.world and lemmy.ml have found ways to survive and thrive and the fediverse generally seems to be supported in a very grassroots sort of fashion. Donations, patrons, people who have the hardware and bandwidth sharing what they can for the greater community. Perhaps loops will go the same way.

Such a neat piece of software, I remember streaming internet radio (somafm) and trying out different skins on my windows xp laptop back in the early 2000’s and just feeling like the cyberpunk future had arrived. Milkdrop was my gateway drug. Fun seeing it make a comeback, I hope it develops a healthy community and we get some good software out of it. Internet drama be damned.

Same, I stream using the airplay protocol from my Lyrion Music Server and haven’t had to touch their app since they arrived. If they fuck with that though so help me god I will write the nastiest things about them on the internets.
- Comment on Why is goverment debt not calculated as a % of tax revenues instead of GDP? 2 months ago:
I think it is measured and professionals who work in areas where this was relevant probably track this number among many others. I think the real question you are asking is why it is always framed as a % of GDP in public discussion and news reporting. Some people here point out how % of GDP can be more useful for comparing across countries with vastly different sized economies but I think we all know the real answer has more to do with how people perceive the value differently by using the larger number. Framing government debt as a % of GDP serves the zeitgeist, whatever that is.
- Comment on Do you still play couch coop nowadays? Which games do you recommend? 3 months ago:
I will happily take this opportunity to complain
/startrant that the abandonment of couch co-op is the worst thing to ever happen to gaming. There are some great couch co-op games out there, BUT NOT NEARLY ENOUGH. Seriously, the number of goddamn games that expect you to HAVE TWO COMPUTER AND TWO SCREENS SO YOU CAN PLAY CO-OP WITH SOMEONE ELSE IS TOO DAMN HIGH. /endrant
I highly recommend Broforce, any of the Larian studio games (Divinity Original Sin, Baldur’s Gate 3 etc…), Battleblock Theater, Castle Crashers, Cuphead, For The King, Hypercharge Unboxed, It Takes Two, Portal 2, Overcooked, SpiritFarer, Stardew Valley, Untitled Goose Game, Wobbly Life. Wish there were more.
It is the damndest shame that the Halo Master Chief Collection doesn’t have local co-op, still upsets me to this day.

I’m not gonna dispute that QoL seems to be dropping in the US but statements like this one in the article:
Personal safety has become an increasing concern for many Americans, with rising crime rates and social unrest contributing to a sense of insecurity.
Really highlights how this is a propaganda puff piece in itself. Whatever it’s selling, this bit is silly fearmongering. Actual crime did seem to spike during the height of the covid response but has since continued it’s drop to historic lows. America was significantly worse off crimewise in the 80s. We are living in some of the most crime-free years this country has seen since we started tracking the numbers. And now, unlike this article, I will post some fucking sources.

- Comment on Self hosted voice assistant 1 year ago:
☹️ Mycroft ran out of money and closed down. I think you can still order a Mark2, but the cloud components they were hosting were taken down which essentially breaks the software. There is another company that picked up the ball and took over support but it’s a more limited experience at the moment and the whole ecosystem is in a bit of a rut. The OpenVoiceOS project that spun out of Mycroft looks like the best bet long-term but they haven’t finished a stable release yet. I bought a Mark2, which I still think is the best hardware available for an open source voice assistant, but finding and stitching together the software to make it work is a chore atm.
