Also curious, have a similar project in mind. I’ve tinkered with jekyll a little and heard good things about Hugo. Hopefully people can speak to some of these.

For now I have settled on Pelican - both frontmatter and templating feel very familiar to me. I might even be able to port my PicoCMS theme over. Usage is very straightforward.
I have not tried to install plugins via pip yet.
The theme repository is a holy mess, and most of the themes seem to be from Pelican’s starting days in 2013. They’re moving themes to an organisation but so far it has only 2 themes in it.
