I would like to propose some changes to that title:
Microsoft CEO’s pay rises 63% to $79m,
despite[because of] devastating year for layoffs: 2550jobs lost[employees were fired by their greedy CEO] in 2024 [because he wanted more money] - Comment on Privacy advocates demo Babel Street's "Locate X" software, which can track people at abortion clinics without a warrant and has been bought by multiple law enforcement agencies 3 weeks ago:
Conservatives have already said that they want to inspect children’s genitals, so it’s only a matter of time until they start arguing that they want to regularly inspect women’s genitals as well to “protect unborn children”

And social media websites that allow porn (Twitter, Reddit, Lemmy, Tumblr)
Or just messaging apps where people send each other porn anyways (Whatsapp, Discord, Telegram)

Yeah while I don’t doubt that noise pollution can affect one’s health I can’t hep but wonder how much of this is just the placebo effect, like with people complaining that 5G towers are giving them migranes.

lmao no wonder something looked so off to me, the HD verision is even more clearly AI-generated, even more so considering the website it came from.
Interestingly enough even the larger image on the original website fooled most of the AI image detectors, with only one of them (isitai.com) just barely saying that the image is probably AI-generated, while all the others said with >90% confidence that it wasn’t.

- Comment on ChatGPT’s much-heralded Mac app was storing conversations as plain text 4 months ago:
Don’t a lot of people also keep their tax information as plain text in their PC? If someone’s really worried about that stuff being leaked I think it’s on them to download VeraCrypt or smth, and also obviously not to use ChatGPT for sensitive stuff knowing that OpenAI and Apple will obviously use it as training data.

Maybe they should try using Claude 3.5 Sonnet to write more secure code for their systems. I’ve heard it’s the best LLM out there when it comes to coding 🤡

As someone who’s not too familiar with the bureaucracy of academia I have to ask: Can’t the authors just upload all their studies to ResearchGate if they want? I know that they can share it privately with others when they request a paper, so can they post it publicly too?

As someone who studied CS at uni for 3 years I saw first-hand how there’s plenty of idiots in this field. Two of my classmates identified as Nazis and thought that the holocaust didn’t happen, besides a significant chunk leaning to the right more generally.
There’s plenty of really smart people working in the field of AI, but there’s also plenty of people who just think they’re smart.

I’ve always liked Kbin’s design and funcionality more than Lemmy, but the latter is more popular and sometimes posts/comments won’t load properly on Kbin, so I’ve stuck with Lemmy for now.

- Comment on BitTorrent is No Longer the ‘King’ of Upstream Internet Traffic 7 months ago:
In early 2019 bittorrent’s website views fluctuated between ~6M to ~9M. Now it’s around 3M to 4M.
In early 2019 utorrent’s visits fluctuated between ~26M to ~75M. Now it sits around 25M to 21M.
The fact that there were far more captures in early 2019 for both of them might be an indication that this was their peak, and while visits have reduced since then they’re far from dying.
Streaming services may be part of the reason, though I also think it’s because many games and software have switched to freemium & microtransactions, so you can use them without spending money if you want, along with the fact that free and open source alternatives to mainstream software have become more robust and popular. When I was a kid I torrented Sony Vegas, but now that’s simply not necessary since we have DaVinci Resolve.
