- Comment on American Taylor Swift fans are flummoxed by the MCG's lack of parking. But Australia still has way too much of it 8 months ago:
I live right near the MCG and a decent number of people still drive in. I’m not sure why though since the city council makes a fortune by doing the rounds 2 hours in to a game and ticketing everyone without a parking permit (which is a lot of people) and the number of vehicle break-ins is pretty high too.
- Comment on What were some of your favourite Australian TV shos?w 8 months ago:
Haha I got it on sale a JB. I should make a digital backup of it actually. Can’t believe I haven’t done it yet…
- Comment on Which OS do you use for your homeserver? 9 months ago:
Same here for the same reasons (although I started with FreeBSD 4.x) and have adapted to ZFS and Jails over the years.
The POLA (Principle Of Least Astonishment) when it comes to changes is awesome too.

Problem is I imagine a lot of their hardware is under NDA so they’re unable to. I appreciate what they’re trying to do but a lot of hardware companies sadly won’t allow them to publish a lot of things. I do wish there was more open-source hardware (and I say that as a huge open-source advocate)
- Comment on Toshiba exec claims hard drives are 7X cheaper than SSDs and will continually evolve for large datacenters 10 months ago:
This is my thing. I have about 122TB of spinning metal (with the same as an offsite backup) with SSDs as ZIL and L2ARC. And it’s awesome. HDDs I think will genuinely be important for for the foreseeable future.

Hey hey - with Jerboa on Android I’m getting “failed to verify JWT token”. Looked it up an it appears to be an issue with Jerboa (github.com/dessalines/jerboa/issues/1285) so no action needed on your side, just an FYI for people here I guess!
- Comment on NSW car crash involving detective charged with drink-driving is being probed by police watchdog 10 months ago:
I used to run in to a guy at my ‘regular’ who was with the Office of Police Integrity. He was bitter and angry because his job was in to investigate cops who fucked up or were crooked, and the police union would block it all. He wanted to do the right thing and was blocked at every stage. Hated cops, hated his job…
- Comment on Internode and Westnet shutdown: TPG moves customers to iiNet 11 months ago:
Yeah I found both Google and MS will arbitrarily act like dicks. Have it all sorted these days but still keeps me on my toes. Interestingly I can’t email myself from my work email address because the MS mail service they use fails SPF checks…
All fun and games at the end of the day! :)

I’m trying to remember this correctly, but traditionally /home is a symlink of /usr/home.
- Comment on Internode and Westnet shutdown: TPG moves customers to iiNet 11 months ago:
I use FreeBSD so used the guide here:
Sadly it is a little outdated and 1 step will fail right now until a new package is committed in to the FreeBSD repo (HTMLPurifier) which was removed as it was PHP7 only for a while. But yeah, have SPF, DKIM and DMARC running too. Took a little fiddling since I technically host for 2 domains but trial and error and all good now.

I’ve been self-hosting email for 10+years. I can confirm it’s a pain in the arse… Harder from a dynamic IP too (since you basically can’t get any reputation, or you might get an IP that’s banned for ‘x’ reasons)
Postfix + Dovecot here

Awesome, thanks for the info!
- Comment on Internode and Westnet shutdown: TPG moves customers to iiNet 11 months ago:
I have a power plan with static IP (host my own servers) etc.
Will be interesting to see if that gets brought across. If not it looks like Aussie BB can cover those requirements if needed.

Been with Internode for over 20 years, not looking forward to changing provider…
- Comment on Relative size comparison of social media platforms (December 2023) 11 months ago:
A couple of years ago I ended up in the 1% because of one single thing I posted 2 weeks after I signed up purely to generate some rage because so many subs needed minimum karma… Can completely attest to this.

- Comment on Will Microsoft drop the TPM requirement for Win 11 once Win 12 rolls around? 11 months ago:
I honestly think it’s the best OS they released. Shame so many games would throw a shitfit at the time because it reported it was Windows NT (rightfully so).
- Comment on How did your electorate vote in the Voice referendum? 1 year ago:
78% yes so far. But it’s not enough.
I have a partner who looks indigenous (but she isn’t) and is scared of how this will all play out.
- Comment on Hemp's potential to become major Australian agricultural industry for manufacturing building products 1 year ago:
I remember seeing something on Bamboo too and how we should be trying harder to grow it and use it as a core material. But growers are also reluctant. I admit I’m a bit outside of my domain of expertise on this but it seems we could be doing a lot better.
- Comment on ‘If they don’t comply, they die’: family of fatal NSW police shootings call for independent inquiry 1 year ago:
I’m in Vic and work once called for a wellbeing check-in on me (bipolar). Thankfully the main cop spoke to seemed lovely and just wanted to chat, asked me what day it was etc. to check whether I was psychotic or not. His partner was much more… Shitty. Asked only a couple of questions but made it feel like an interrogation that put me on edge and that made him more on edge. The main cop shut him down though thankfully.

There is also dancesafe.org that’s been around for 25-odd years in the US too. Ever since I heard about it in the late 90s/early 2000s I thought we should totally have an org like that here in Aus too.
- Comment on Keeping cats indoors is a rare solution where everybody wins 1 year ago:
Cat owner here too. One of my cats is a pure-breed Maine Coon, the other is a domestic mid/long hair. They have never ever been outdoors cats (well, the latter was a stray so I guess she was?) but they’re indoors kitties now. No issues at all, they have no interest to go outside. They are happy and content. I support indoors-only cats, and this is from someone who lives in a shoebox apartment.
- Comment on Coalition will seek to block Labor plan for cheaper medicine after backlash from pharmacies 1 year ago:
That’s what it was, yeah it was “on authority”! It would suck because otherwise I’d have to get the prescriptions filled out every 2 weeks which was a PITA. (even monthly is a PITA…)
- Comment on Coalition will seek to block Labor plan for cheaper medicine after backlash from pharmacies 1 year ago:
I’ve actually been able to do this occasionally in the past. I tend to be very drug-tolerant (and it sucks) and for a couple of my meds my GP called up medicare and the prescription was modified so I could do this.
I wonder if this is a simplification of that process?
