Funny description came up about Linux this weekend from my father in law. He kept referring to Linux as an “aftermarket OS”. First time I’ve heard it out like that, didn’t bother responding tbh lol.

Isn’t this the topic Jayztwocents has talked about recently? AIB’s making up their own defaults for cpu performance.

What’s the threshold for quantum tunneling to be an issue? Cuz at such small scales, particles can…teleport through stuff.

I set mine up with a no-ip dyndns for free. Lots of options here op. But in the long run having any domain is going to smooth out the process. Also don’t skip over LetsEncrypt cert.

- Comment on MacBooks, Chromebooks lead losers in laptop repairability analysis 3 months ago:
From what I remember, even the dell process was a testament to following instructions to the T. Having to do some steps with the battery connected, then more with it disconnected, then connected again. HP used some special screw for board locking. Lol what a wild time.
- Comment on MacBooks, Chromebooks lead losers in laptop repairability analysis 3 months ago:
I can only go by people like Luis Rossman on Mac stuff, but I’ve done my fair amount of Chromebook repairs. Granted it’s been a few years, and most were dell and splash of HP/Lenovo. Hardware wise there’s not much to them, physically. Pretty easy with simple tools. However, the shimming/reloading the OS is a whole different monster. Dell was the easiest, but was still involved.

Not sure if the rpi3 can use the 64bit version, or if it’s possible for it use an SSD like the the 4 can?

So, you’re saying there’s a chance :p
The sentiment for me here, is any overall betterment of portable power is good. Yea the article and this specific tech is presented in an overhyped fashion, no doubt.

My grampa had a pacemaker that was.
- Comment on A tiny radioactive battery could keep your future phone running for 50 years 3 months ago:
Nuclear power at small scale is already in use in devices. Some medical devices, smoke detectors etc. As long as there is proper shielding, the enclosure is robust enough, and the overall device is made easily serviceable, I’m all for it. I can understand the fear sentiment of anything flagged as radioactive, but radiation is all around us already. Idk, but the less we can ditch super toxic and explosive lithium the better.

I can see that. Though it’s been a few years since I’ve used it.

I only used Spotify for podcasts when I used to be on the road all the time. For music, I’ve had a free Pandora account for years now. Does what I need it too. And with wireguard+pihole I don’t get ads either.
- Comment on Those who are self hosting at home, what case are you using? (Looking for recommendations) 4 months ago:
I’m using an old HP z420 box. It supports up to 128gigs of ecc ram (which I have), has tons of drive and SATA options.
It could be possible to repurpose the chassis for custom builds too.

Whoops, by helmed, I meant most of the customer facing techs. Not the actual pharmacist.
- Comment on [deleted] 4 months ago:
This is bad, but around where I live, most of these pharmacies are helmed by teens just old enough to work there. I’d imagine many younger people in these positions would just do what the cops are asking: Cuz they aren’t paid to think, insufficient training, they just wanna get the day over. They deal enough with crazy customers as it is, let alone the hastle from cops. And if their policy of just let the shoplifters walk, why would it be different for cops?
- Comment on Nuclear energy is more expensive than renewables, CSIRO report finds 4 months ago:
Look, I’m all for renewable energy, where it makes sense. When I lived in southern California, BLM had so many wildlife restrictions in place, even for off-roading it was kinda nuts. A lot of it dealt with tortoises. Shortly after moving out of state, they started building solar farms all over the place. They’re massive multi dozens to hundreds of acres in size. Many of them in the same areas they got all worked up about for the tortoises…
Generating the power is only a third the battle. Still need to store and distribute that power. Factor in power demands etc.
What I’m trying to say is, as a species we need to get better. This is a good step. However, the power output of a single nuclear plant to the size shouldn’t be overlooked. We should stop fossil fuel reliance. Nuclear is at this point very understood. Yes some bad accidents happened in the past.

Honestly, maybe having it also backup to a consumer grade external HDD enclosure. As much as it pains to say. But like one of those WD mybook things or similar. Designed to be dead simple for the average person.
- Comment on Port Forwarding Alternative? 5 months ago:
If it’s fiber, you don’t need the modem. You’ll still need it once every few months.
Things you’ll need:
- your own router
- cheap 4 port switch (1gig pref)
Setup: Connect gpon (the little fiber converter box they installed on the wall near modem) wan to any port on 4port switch. Then from switch to gpon port of modem (usually red or green port). Make sure modem fully syncs. Once this happens, you can move the cable from the modem to your own routers wan port. Done! Allow router a few moments to sync as well.
Now, every once in a while they’ll send a line refresh signal that will break this, or if a power outage occurs. In such case, you’ll just plug back in their modem, move cable back to gpon port of modem, wait for sync. Move cable back to router.

Valid points. I just don’t care or give those platforms any real thought, or take them seriously at all. Maybe it’s having been so desensitized to online opinions from the early days of of internet chat rooms or something.
With that said, I’m still no fan in general, of speech censorship. I’m not right or left either. And I’ll take my down votes in stride as consequences of being able to share an opinion here.
- Comment on Stop suggesting children as friends, social media firms told 5 months ago:
I don’t condone any of that. However, platforms such as those are basically a public square for everyone. And with that comes the ability for the fringe to speak too. We don’t have to listen, but they have the ‘right’ to speak. Of course, within the laws.

I’ve been saying that MS is likely trying to ditch the NT kernel for a while now. But I forgot about them azure cloud desktop. I can see them rolling out a Chromebook like environment (Linux based) that would hook into a cloud azure full desktop instance. That way, their Surface devices (for example) could be used for basic web browsing stuff on its own, then you could connect to your desktop for everything else.
