Let’s face it, Nvidia doesn’t care if you buy a gaming card or not right now. You can complain, but they can’t hear you over their money counting machines.
Nvidia is only selling enough gaming cards to keep their market share from falling too low. All the rest of their silicon is allocated towards data center.

My Mastodon instance disappeared a few weeks ago, so I’m getting a kick out of this post.

Thanks. Mine were wrong.
- Comment on Why aren't all rooms holodecks? 1 week ago:
I’d say the biggest reason is energy, like everyone else. But also, being able to make your room into any fantasy scenario you want would probably lead to problems with adjusting to everyday life. They don’t need a whole ship full of Barclays screwing up at their job.
- Comment on Meta in talks for $200 billion AI data center project, The Information reports 1 week ago:
I don’t have a problem with these companies building new data centers, but when it comes to powering them, they need to pay the market rate; no subsidies or tax credits.
I should not have to pay more out of my pocket just so Meta can get electricity at a lower rate than I do.

I saw the SR+RoadCraft package on Steam. I might check it out.

I’m still playing Mudrunner. Is there a big difference?

I agree with CameronDev, not so much on the capacity, but the bandwidth. At 100+ Gb, the Ryzen/Core platforms are really holding you back with their weak I/O.
If you need that much memory, you might be better off picking up a used Xeon/Epyc from Ebay. Their CPU speeds are lower, but the quad channel RAM could make up for it, depending on what you’re trying to do.

I just downloaded and tried it. It’s beautiful. Brings back so many memories.

Mastodon is still confusing to me. But that’s probably because I’ve never been on Twitter, FB, Insta, etc.

One day it was the 18th largest Lemmy instance, then it just disappeared. No word from the owner or anything.
- Comment on Landing page for all my services 3 weeks ago:
tchncs.de/en/ has a pretty good landing page.
- Comment on What are some of the non-technical parts of the fediverse that appeal to you? 3 weeks ago:
It’s not so focused on the US. I live in the US and I’m getting tired of hearing about us.

Nice video. Looking at those instance names, I can pretty much tell the era when this video was made. I’m a vlemmy orphan.

Seems like that should be illegal, like changing the odometer on a car, but what do I know.

And here I was complaining about cheeseburger.social going down. Our user count was well into the dozens. Dozens!
- Comment on Getting into Civ 6 9 months ago:
I think 5 is what I’m looking for. Sometimes Civ (in general) gets out of hand with the micromanagement. I want something that’s kind of casual.
- Comment on Getting into Civ 6 9 months ago:
I’ve been looking to try Civ 5 or 6, but haven’t decided which one yet.

- Comment on Using your phone to pay is convenient, but it can also mean you spend more 10 months ago:
I guess “It’s not for everyone” is the real takeaway here. I’m not a phone guy in general, but I’ve been using cards since BK was still selling 99¢ Whoppers. I’m guessing both of us are ready to pay before the cashier has our order rung up.
To each their own. (I’m finally admitting that I’m fighting a losing battle on writing checks though.)
- Comment on Using your phone to pay is convenient, but it can also mean you spend more 10 months ago:
Using a phone sounds inconvenient to me. I usually just pull my card out of my wallet, wave it over the terminal until I hear a beep and that’s it. Worst case scenario, I have to insert it into the chip reader or God-forbid swipe it through the slot like some kind of Neanderthal.
I’m kidding, but seriously, that’s easier than screwing around with a phone, to me.
- Comment on Trump’s stake in Truth Social falls by $1bn after company reveals $58m loss 11 months ago:
As far as I know, he still has to pay the full amount if he looses his appeal trumpdebtcounter.com The judge just lowered the bond amount Trump has to put up in order to file an appeal.
At this point, I don’t care if he’s still rich as long as he doesn’t get back into office. We’ve already seen that justice isn’t blind, some people are above the law, and Trump will never be held accountable. He’s going to weasel his way out of paying most of the judgements against him.
I don’t know what’s wrong with that debt counter. It was showing $474mil a week ago.
- Comment on Raspberry Pi is 4.5 times faster than the Cray 1 was in 1978 1 year ago:
I was hoping to come up with a joke to follow that, but it would probably just be a FLOP.
- Comment on Raspberry Pi is 4.5 times faster than the Cray 1 was in 1978 1 year ago:
Yep.
“In 1978, the Cray 1 supercomputer cost $7 Million, weighed 10,500 pounds and had a 115 kilowatt power supply. It was, by far, the fastest computer in the world. The Raspberry Pi costs around $70 (CPU board, case, power supply, SD card), weighs a few ounces, uses a 5 watt power supply and is more than 4.5 times faster than the Cray 1”
…
Raspberry Pi ARM CPUs - The comment above was for the 2012 Pi 1. In 2020, the Pi 400 average Livermore Loops, Linpack and Whetstone MFLOPS reached 78.8, 49.5 and 95.5 times faster than the Cray 1. - Comment on Hardware question 1 year ago:
It’s probably a pain to set up in Windows. In Linux, it just works, there’s nothing to set up. I’m using it right now.
OP really should have mentioned their OS.
- Comment on Hardware question 1 year ago:
I just did a quick bing chat search (“does DRI_PRIME work on systems without a cpu with integrated graphics?”) and it says it will work. I can’t check for you because my CPUs all have graphics.
I CAN tell you that some motherboards will support it (my ASUS does) and some don’t (my MSI).
BTW, I’m talking about Linux. If you’re using Windows, there’s a whole series of hoops you have to jump through. LTT did a video a while back.
- Comment on Housing market affordability is so bad that Zillow says it will take you 13.5 years to break even on a purchase from July onward 1 year ago:
So true. Where I am, a podunk town in the deep south, most of the homes being built are 4 bed, 1800sf+. The ‘starter’ homes with 3 beds, 1200sf are still like $185k which is ridiculous compared to what people make around here.
Even building condominiums would be an improvement. Personally, I hate condos (because I own one) but at least it gives people the chance to own something.
- Comment on Housing market affordability is so bad that Zillow says it will take you 13.5 years to break even on a purchase from July onward 1 year ago:
I don’t think it will burst. It’ll just slowly deflate as new houses come onto the market and demand eases. The main problem (at least where I live) is that there just aren’t enough houses being built. I don’t think we’ll see a sharp price drop anytime soon because there are so many people waiting to buy.
