Ha! I definitely had a few hiccups. My admin account was disassociated somehow. A few db commands fixed that, but it took a while to track down the error and solutions. I also had problems with the poxy, syncing when other tasks have high resource use (the whole lemmy system justbarfs for a few hours) and API access for 3rd party apps but users could log into the web just fine.
But then again, isn’t that sort of the fun and reward of selfhosting? 🤪 Anyways, working again… Until the next update.

I’m sticking with lemmy too, but I’ve had so many self hosted server issues I’ve lost steam.
I totally understand the growing pains and am really impressed with development, but I’ve had frustrating negative experiences with folks here too. There are some passionately angry, stubborn groups bringing down other communities and its disheartening.

I installed WSL straight out of the box and its been nothing but problems for me. Weird errors, reinstallations, commands not working.
After 2 days, I got one docker container running only to discover you can’t pass through hardware devices. (That I know of)
I’m going the VM route tonight. Maybe a wipe and reinstall too. The system is days old and no data stored yet.
- Comment on Can I/Should I upgrade RAM past my machine's recommended specs? 1 year ago:
Word of caution: I added more than max ram to a Synology server once and it “checked out” but Plex sent garbled transcoded if it were ever used. I feared data corruption on routine data checks so I swapped it back.
That was long ago and doubt newer models have the same limits, but it made me think of the data vs risk factor.

In 1999, I had a 25mbps asymmetrical static IP for $25/month from a new technology called a cable modem. It rocked. I could download faster than the local school/college that was still using T1 lines.
They clamped down hard on upload speed when torrents became popular. If I recall, my IP was 72.45.27.220 back then. I ran websites, file servers, streamed my music library, and used QuickTime broadcaster to stream TV/VHS so I could watch videos while in class.

My research steered me away from the QNAP on throughput issues. I really wanted a Dream Machine Pro, but they we’re out of my price range.
I ended up getting an Asus RT-AX89X and a 10G SFP+ card and am pretty impressed. I saw one used recently <$200. I get about 2.3G down, 3.5G up with the various IPS/IDS programs running.
The TP-Link wasn’t really an option when I upgraded. Nothing against it, but $500 is high. Would choose a DMP over that on price alone.

Could someone please ELI5 that script. I’m all for keeping things clean, but old enough to remember the days of console based trolling.
- Comment on Should I wait for the BPI R4 ? 1 year ago:
I researched SFP adapter compatibility for my ISP fiber and came to the conclusion it wasn’t worth it. The copper converter they provide has to be either registered or run ISP based configs. I found one from the same brand and stats as my ONT but it was $400.
I read ISP optical networks use a lot more config to weed out gremlins and compatibility isn’t the same as copper. But it’s mostly ISP based and if they didn’t have a profile for the device, it probably wouldn’t work.
I could be wrong though or things changed since then. I’d like to have fiber straight into my router too.
- Comment on Netgear GS108LP switch not working 1 year ago:
Man, I’ve had problems with that line of switches too. Not that exact model, but similar.
First idea would be factory reset and do that a couple times.
Second idea is unplug everything, reboot, and wait. Then wait some more. Just when you feel like it shouldn’t be taking this long, give it another minute to plug your stuff in.
My particular managed model seemed to have a problem linking at different speeds.
Your Hue bridge uses an older/cheaper chip that is perfectly applicable for the device, but runs at a max slower speed. Try not connecting that. It caused all sorts of problems for me and terrible performance for all devices.
Eventually I returned my Netgear unit and got a TP Link thingy that’s been working great.

Now, can someone please take their taiko drums away?
I mean, come on. Every. Single. Trailer.
