They do something fun with this in the three body problem. It’s amazing and makes a ton of sense but in the real world the application will probably be a lot cleaner.

No it adds variety to the look of writing, each character is a syllable not a single sound (mostly) so they use fewer characters for per syllable, having two syllabary systems means that there’s more visual distinctness per word. I’m not a Japanese speaker so don’t take my word for it, but no they’re very much not stupid it’s a clever system and one that’s related to the history and culture of Japan.
- Comment on Everyone makes incest jokes about Adam and Eve and their children but they never mention that there was another woman named Lilith (Adam's first wife) who would have added variance to the gene pool. 9 months ago:
Nah genetic disorders aren’t mutations, they’re incorrect copies of original traits. I’m not a geneticist so don’t quote me on this, but the reason incest causes problems has nothing to do with mutations as they rarely happen and everything to do with not having enough variation in your own genetics to cover when there’s “data loss”. Again, I’m not a scientist.

Yeah as I said take what I said with a massive grain of salt, some people are saying it’s because of a limit of hdmi data sending so it could be that.
- Comment on EU antitrust chief to Tim Cook: Apple must allow third-party app stores 10 months ago:
I really get it man, I was originally not gonna take the offer (it was a take it or leave it, not a situation I could sell it) since I love all the open systems android uses. Unfortunately, I’ve been buying androids for the vast majority of my life and they just haven’t been that usable for me. It’s not like I’m giving money to apple anyway since I’m not buying anything from them and I would really benefit from 3rd party apps since I used to use them on a daily basis on my android.

Me neither to be honest, 24 is kind of a weird number when added up.

I found people online saying it’s because it’s 24 frames (standard frame rate) higher than 120 meaning it can be used to watch movies using integer scaling (1:6 ratio of frame rate rather than 1:5.5 or something strange), take that with a massive grain of salt though because lots of people say there’s other reasons.

I got given an iPhone, owning a branded product isn’t as much of a choice as you’d think. And it really doesn’t change anything for you since you’d have to actively go out of your way normally to use a 3rd party app store. The walled garden is still there unless you go exploring.

This is actually a really interesting question, personally never. Not like heat death of the universe never but I don’t feel like there’s a point in theoretical forever young immortality where I would want to die, there’s always more shit to do and I’ve never felt like I need to up my game or something. I’m curious what you guys think though

- Comment on Why don’t we use radiators as heat sinks in the summer and pump cold water through them? 1 year ago:
Interestingly heat spreads better than cold (I’m not an entirely reliable source for this so take it with a big grain of salt) but essentially since hot things are more energetic they have a tendency to spread but since cold things are more static, cooling is more difficult. Also radiators use blackbody radiation to emit heat via light the same way metal heats up when hot whereas there’s no cold equivalent to this.
