I thought Amazon Music was a small up-charge on top of prime?
- Comment on 16GB of RAM Could Be the New Minimum in Apple's Upcoming M4 Macs 2 months ago:
Exactly. I told her that 8gb might be fine for a year or two, but if she wants this thousand plus dollar laptop to last four years she needs to invest the extra money now. Especially once she told me she might want to play Minecraft or Shadow of the Tomb Raider on it

My sister just bought a MacBook Air for college, and I had to beg her to spend the extra money on 16gb of memory. It feels like a scam that it appears cheap with the starting at price, but nobody should actually go with those “starting at” specs.

Phone maybe, but not a SIM card with data. Although you can do a lot without a SIM card if your school has public WiFi I guess
- Comment on EE warns parents against giving children under 11 a smartphone 2 months ago:
I strongly believe that a large part of the reason China is so strict with underage phone and game restrictions is because the parents are at work for too long to do any real parenting. Ideally parents should be the ones making those choices and actually monitoring their kids, but since I don’t have kids I can’t really say for myself.

- Comment on Immich relies on a third-party service that seems shady to me 3 months ago:
Good on you for having such a detailed and well-meaning post, and good on the devs for being so receptive to ideas. I run Immich but am definitely a novice when it comes to self hosting things, so I had no idea this was going on. I don’t have any suggestions for the feature request but the proposed changes to the documentation would be good for people to know its thete and can be changed.

Possibly not now that it saves your codes to your google account (it didn’t use to), but it made me uncomfortable for my password manager to have both factors together to log into something like my bank or root AWS account. So you’d have to compromise two different places to get in

I like 1Password’s built in MFA support, if it’s a really sensitive account I use Google Authenticator because I haven’t bothered researching better local alternatives

I have the basic $3 one, I just call it my shitposting tax. Longer messages, using emotes in any server and larger files. I use it a lot since my friends haven’t warmed up to Matrix yet, might as well support them while its not total trash

I have Prime and still pirated it, because the website and app are such a mess
- Comment on YouTube is finally cracking down on third-party apps that enable ad-blocking 6 months ago:
Honestly, I pay for YouTube Premium but I still use Revanced and NewPipe for the extra features. Why can’t they just leave me alone?
- Comment on Can you un-smart a smart tv? 8 months ago:
I was wondering the same thing. Is anyrhing stopping me from buying a “smart” TV and just never putting it online? My current one hasn’t been connected in years but I bought that thing in 2018, maybe things have changed

OpenMediaVault (Debian), it’s the perfect amount of tinkering and simplicity for my first nas/homeserver
- Comment on I rent a vps to run fediverse instances. Here's what I've found 11 months ago:
I’d like to spin up a Matrix instance for me and my friends on my NAS, but like you said it’s currently more involved than just getting a domain and running a compose. The space is evolving fast though and experiments like these help a lot

What local players do you use? I haven’t found a good one on Windows so I just use the default (formerly Groove Music).
