The tone of this comic reminds me of this video which I find equally funny
- Comment on NHS charter to stress biological sex when placing patients in wards 1 week ago:
If you knew as much as you try to put on about biological sex, you’d know that’s its far, far more complicated than “male or female” and there are plenty of people who are assigned one thing at birth which doesn’t factually align with their biological sex. So yes, it is an assignment.
I fail to see how a rational inpatient would give the slightest fuck if the girl a bed over from them had a cock when they were born so i dont know what preferred outcome they have in this, and I can speak as a trans person to the fact that it would not be my preferred outcome to be singled out and put in my own room. I’d choose it over being in the male ward, but its not my “preferred outcome”.
- Comment on NHS charter to stress biological sex when placing patients in wards 1 week ago:
So you consider “putting those weird other people in their own rooms away from the rest of us normals” to be inclusive? Its 1 step better than forcing them to be in a room full of people of the opposite gender, sure, but it sure as hell isn’t inclusive. Anyway, this conversation is over a week stale, I don’t care for it anymore. Have a nice life!

Inception is kinda all about closure, which I’ll give you isn’t quite “social commentary” but its treading dangerously close to mental health commentary.
Interstellar is all about climate change, and the duty of humanity to fix their own mess, which are certainly social commentary points
Star Trek has social commentary and political commentary baked into its DNA, everything is an allegory for some real life issue they want to trick people into thinking about with an open mind, or from a new point of view
Star Wars, well, looking at when it came out the parallels to the Vietnam War are palpable but its dripping with anti-authoritarian messaging
Its funny, I was almost surprised to see Inception in your list. Not because I think its bad media, I think its pretty rad, but because it sort of feels more like a standard heist film with a science-y/fantasy-y gimmick. Certainly by my criteria it wouldn’t count as SciFi for the aforementioned lack of social/political commentary, but its an interesting edge case.

That’s fair. What are some of your favourite sci fi pieces?
- Comment on We can dream right 2 weeks ago:
If your sci fi isn’t making some sort of social or political statement, its not sci fi - its just sparkling futurism.

Mm, I suppose I only have my experience to go off, it might be much worse as you say elsewhere.
Re: username, one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite games is called “Apotheosis” and it was my first time encountering that word. I riffed on it and settled on my username - so, I guess neither? Lol
- Comment on the struggle 2 weeks ago:
Sounds neat! It presumably works just as well, too, since placebos have been shown to work even when you know they’re a placebo.
- Comment on the struggle 2 weeks ago:
I agree with you. In my experience at the very least its quite easy to tell the difference between a person who uses it like a magic 8 ball and a person who truly believes in the pseudoscience, and the latter is fairly uncommon (again, in my experience)
- Comment on the struggle 2 weeks ago:
Oh, sure. But I reckon a potential partner bringing up their mb type in a casual conversation gets a pass (the context of the tweet). Bringing up pseudoscience as a hiring criterion is obviously ridiculous.
- Comment on the struggle 2 weeks ago:
I think to a lot of people things like astrology, Myers Briggs types and rock magic are mostly an aid that helps them to more easily process what they’re thinking and feeling, and also feel as though they have an outlet for those thoughts and feelings.
9 out of 10 times, they know its not “real”, you’re not really achieving much by yucking their yum. I say this as someone who doesn’t believe in or engage with any of those things.
(I also fully acknowledge that the tweet is a double whammy joke that puts the author in on it as well)

“I’m going to reply to the trans person under the premise that they don’t understand sex and gender”
The sentiment of my comment was a lot deeper than “conflating sex and gender”. The subtext was that single-sex wards where you are sorted by your AGAB are not trans (or intersex) inclusive, even if technically valid sorting criteria.

“We need to make sure that we put women in the men’s ward and men in the women’s ward. That will make people feel safer and result in fairer care” fucking transphobe terf island I hate it here

I appreciate the sentiment, but even those who seek to take everything away from me deserve rights. I hate “gender-critical” shmoes with all my heart, but even they should have rights.
Now, whether “being allowed to have a say in someone else’s gender” should be a right… Fuck no
