- Comment on It took 68 years for the world to reach 1 terawatt of solar PV capacity. It took just two years to double it | RenewEconomy 1 week ago:
Global energy demand is not expected to fall, especially as more people gain access through economic development of traditionally poorer nations.
That is why increasing renewable generation capacity is so important now.

- Comment on Sodium-ion battery startup scores large automotive supply contract for a 10 GWh production line 2 weeks ago:
Ah wow, I had current lfp at around 220-250 but that looks like it’s on the R&D lines and not in series production yet
I guess with the sheer amount of research being lumped into Lithium batteries at the moment, I would be surprised if it is overtaken by anything short term at least in the auto space. Let’s see…
- Comment on Sodium-ion battery startup scores large automotive supply contract for a 10 GWh production line 2 weeks ago:
Just to clarify, the article states these are for low voltage systems inside cars, and not powering cars themselves.
Which makes more sense as the density of Na-ion is ~30% less that Li-ion.
- Comment on Singapore Approves 2,600-Mile Undersea Cable to Import Solar Energy from Australia 2 weeks ago:
Do the economics of nuclear make sense though? A quick search showed around $5k/kW capacity. That’s $5 billion per GW. Then there’s permit and build times on top of that.
Surely renewables + distributed storage is going to become key?
- Comment on Singapore Approves 2,600-Mile Undersea Cable to Import Solar Energy from Australia 2 weeks ago:
Is there already extensive precedence of undersea, long distance power distribution? I could imagine the losses would be outrageous at that distance.

- Comment on Energy experts say U.S. policy must direct money to industries that really need clean hydrogen — and away from those that are better off using clean electricity. 1 month ago:
I’m sorry, are we really going to pretend long haul flights will become hydrogen in the near future? Has any airport begun building, or even thinking of, refueling infrastructure?

I will never forgive the ABC for going the clickbait route.
The reasons are: 1- governments will not regulate as it accounts for $7 Billion in tax revenue. 2- sporting organisations receive a considerable amount in advertising revenue.

But that is not “using hydrocarbons as a battery” as your comment mentioned.

Which circumstances?
Using electricity to create fuels purely for storage is a dead concept AFAIK. eFuels in the medium term will likely only be used where batteries cannot in their current form, e.g. aircraft or shipping. The energy and money cost needed to synthesise on-site with current tech is too high.

I’d argue you can almost always do more to change the environment you are familiar with, rather than moving to a new one.
You may quickly find people, politics and politicians are equally as closed minded, independent of which country you are in.

- Comment on Most Australians take more than 30 minutes to get to work. How does that compare to other countries? 4 months ago:
I can’t tell if this is a sarcastic comment, but just in case it isn’t: Because during holidays, a noticeable enough percentage of the people who join your commute at 6:30am, have decided to not go to work that day and will instead enjoy a day with their offspring.
It’s also a good time to remind everyone that the train however, if an option, will be equally fast regardless of school holiday periods.

I was incredibly glad all of them were there, and all the more grateful after that chat. Please seek any help you can, even if it’s to give those cats a midnight walking buddy.

The daily mail is not a reliable news source. Your friend should speak to their healthcare specialist for advice on flying if they haven’t already
- Comment on F.A.A. Audit of Boeing’s 737 Max Production Found Dozens of Issues 8 months ago:
Even the smaller competitors like Bombardier would have an interest in this, even if they are not the manufacturers of similar sized aircraft, a loss of faith in the aviation industry hurts everyone too. Plus suppliers etc.
As for the investigators (I know you meant FAA, not FCC), we have a similar issue in medical devices - you need seriously well educated experts to perform the investigations, and it is hard to find any without industry experience which wouldn’t look good on paper. The solution is to try as hard as you can to not have ex-employees audit their ex-bosses, but it isn’t always possible so we accept some overlap. It doesn’t mean these people don’t take their job seriously.
- Comment on F.A.A. Audit of Boeing’s 737 Max Production Found Dozens of Issues 8 months ago:
I don’t think this ends in beheadings, but there will (hopefully) be significant follow on effects. A threat to consumer confidence in flying is a risk to the entire industry, all Boeing’s competitors and the airlines will be screaming for the FAA to get the actions right here…
- Comment on Expensive school uniforms don't make kids better at maths, so why are schools so focused on them? 9 months ago:
School systems are state controlled, so it may vary across the country but all schools I know require a purchases uniform. This is additional to any school fees or other material costs, and must be bought at the school’s uniform shop.
