- Comment on My elderly parents' car broke down a couple hundred miles away. How can I get them and their car home (or fixed) with a minimum of cost and hassle? 1 year ago:
They said in the comment I replied to
but as far as I can tell, for it to be useful either I’d have to be with them or one of them would have to be a member of my household and an “Associate Member” on my account, none of which is the case.
But with AAA, it’s not about payment. I’m not sure if you know or not, but AAA is a membership service some people pay for annually in North America and it provides access to towing.
In my case, I pay about $50 each year and have 3 slots for the year to get towing, battery service, gas delivered if I run out of gas, tire changes if I get a flat, among other tow services. If I need one, I call in to AAA and they contact a local tow truck driver to come on behalf of AAA but they are not employees of AAA. There is no payment needed when the tow truck driver arrives under this service as AAA handles that on their end from membership fees from members.
But when the tow truck driver arrives, someone on scene with the troubled vehicle needs to show proof that they are the AAA member who called for the tow truck driver. If no one has that AAA card to prove membership, the tow truck driver can leave without doing anything for the vehicle.
So my comment was suggesting that one of OP’s parents downloads the AAA app to their phone which may be treated the same as the plastic card and they can provide that when the tow truck driver arrives as if they are OP and called for the tow, themselves.

Couldn’t one of them download the app and pretend to be you when the tow truck driver gets there?
On my iPhone, I have my AAA in my digital wallet which I think is treated as good as the plastic card.
Might be something to look into?

I wish those little PCs would make a comeback.
But smartphones have changed that, largely.
There is a desire to go back to dumb flip phones, though, and I wonder if that could help bring small form factor PCs back.

Did they really encourage it? Genuinely curious as I never heard that before, but that’s wild if true.

That definitely looks like it! Looked up some Google images and one looks exactly like it on the stalk and the head. Amazing, thank you!

$1600 is crazy. I just built a gaming PC this year with a Ryzen 5 and 4070 Ti for $1600

This so much. I have so many users who include a screenshot and cut off parts of the screen. Sometimes the time is relevant, sometimes the URL is relevant, sometimes the web browser is relevant. I get if you have confidential stuff, you can block that out, but leave everything else in.
- Comment on PlayStation 5- how sre the visuals so good and games run so well on a machine with the equivalent of a GTX 2060? 1 year ago:
It’s a little easier when the machine is dedicated to that and only that. The OS doesn’t have all this extra crap running in the background that takes resources from the game because it was designed for that in mind.
That and devs have just one machine to design their game for versus trying to make their game run on hundreds of machines with very different specs.
Some devs, especially first party devs who work closely with or directly for the manufacturer also have insider knowledge of the system they’re developing the game for. Some developers did this in the Nintendo 64 era by tapping into resources that other games weren’t using to push out even more performance from the hardware.
- Comment on Now that we've had SF for a bit, what do you think? Good, flawed, bad? 1 year ago:
Base building is pretty bland in this game. Internal building design is awful and makes me feel like a lot has been cut or is being reserved for a later date. Like those pods for gardening but there is no internal plants you can place there, so why make these designated pods like that…?

That’s the way I do it too. I rarely sell ships so I can have a slot to use to build a new ship when I want to.
I always love stealing ships when I’m on a random planet/moon to add to my collection for this reason. I don’t steal from civilians, just the enemy factions like Crimson Fleet, etc.
- Comment on After 70 hours, I cheated myself rich 1 year ago:
I did the same.
You can use WeMod to edit in how much credits you want and I don’t think it disables achievements.
- Comment on Isn't OneDrive/Sharepiont the exact OPPOSITE of a shared drive? 1 year ago:
I always get asked what the difference is between SharePoint and OneDrive. I have no fucking clue. I don’t even think Microsoft knows.
And they rename shit all the time, so they probably are the same thing and some department just never got the memo to rebrand.
- Comment on GRIPE: When I switch home-ships, all my display gear gets dumped together with everything else. 1 year ago:
Missed opportunity to sell to pirates like the Crimson Fleet without registering it. Unless that comes later and I just never got to that point in the game.
Pirates wouldn’t care if the ship was registered or not and would likely either use it for more pirating such as ships that can do missions without being officially tied to them or for parts like a chop shop.
I’ve found you only make like 1,000 credits after registering the ship and selling it. Money to be made, sure, but not enough to make it viable when registration is required. Unless you count the valuables in the shop to offload at vendors in person.
- Comment on GRIPE: When I switch home-ships, all my display gear gets dumped together with everything else. 1 year ago:
I have a similar gripe where you make customizations to the ship and everything you had placed around the ship and in separate containers is all moved to the overall cargo hold of the ship. I get why they did that because it would be ripe for exploits and other weirdness.
The other issue is that sometimes I like this because it gets rid of the clutter around the ship like the random little useless items that you’ll never actually use. I don’t care to have that stuff everywhere. But you go offload it for the credits and then a few days later, everything is back the way it is.
There is an exploit to be had here in that you can do this a bunch of get infinite credits by selling all these items every so often they reappear.

- Comment on Have you ever been taken into space while attempting to hijack a ship? 1 year ago:
Huh, that’s awesome.
I had one where I killed everyone who was on the planet/moon and then I got into the dock area when the door was closing. It closed on me and the ship took off but I glitched out and fell back to the ground.
This seems to have been patched out in one of the latest updates as I tried it again but the door wouldn’t close until I left the docking area.

- Comment on One of the absolute best features of lemmy is that everyone is simply allowed to post. 1 year ago:
There were a lot of arbitrary rules that would be easy to break like on AskReddit where if you included anything in the body, your post got removed. Or subs like AITA, TIL, etc. that required you to include AITA and TIL in the subject or your post got removed.
And then some of the rules were temporary, and you’d never know. Some subs outright banned any posts/comments that mentioned COVID at all, in any way.

- Comment on Issues with my second resin print 1 year ago:
I’m unsure as it said it was 73% done but I saw supports and not enough actually printing under the supports…it was weird. But when I went to clean everything, there was a huge circular piece of plastic in the bottom of the vat. So I’m so confused lol
But you’re right! I’m starting from scratch today with deep cleaning on everything and recalibrating. A new USB would be perfect to match!
- Comment on Issues with my second resin print 1 year ago:
Thanks for the recommendations!
A new USB is definitely on my list of things to get…I honestly forgot about that recommendation how it can cause weird issues, but that’s a good point to rule out.
I tried adding some new supports on another attempt last night but had some issues with the print seemingly not printing at all, or maybe it was and I was impatient. Going to try again tonight after watching this video, thank you for the tips!
- Comment on Issues with my second resin print 1 year ago:
Oh yes I did do that! I watched some YouTube videos and followed advice to not shake too much but to shake well up and down and side to side but not as much as I would for a bottle of juice, for example.
- Comment on Issues with my second resin print 1 year ago:
Thank you very much! I’ll look into some new settings for the next attempt at this!
Makes sense about removing supports before washing and curing. I don’t want it cured to the print which will cause other issues, I’m sure! Lol
As far as shaking the resin….well, I took the print directly out of the printer and used the scraper to get the print off the build plate and onto a metal tray. Then I immediately dropped the print into the bucket of water that went onto my Mercury wash and cure machine. I set the machine to begin the washing process which moves the water using a magnet underneath the bucket and set that to wash for 3 minutes. Is that shaking the resin or did I likely miss a step here?

Sort of. So like when you land at New Atlantis, there is a terminal to your right when you are walking away from your ship and into the city. There is usually a guy standing here with a hard hat and a vest on. He’s a ship technician or something like that title. If you speak to him, you can select the option to view/edit your ship and in that menu, you can make edits to your ship and that’s where you will find the different fabs to choose from.
When you are on the habs, do take note that on some of them, you can cycle to the left and right to access more options. So like a 1x3 hab has the option for an All in One access, the next is a Research hab, the next is a science hab, the next is armory, and so on and so forth.
Each city will have a technician like this you can speak to and make these changes. But you can also go to shipyards like the one on Mars’ moon Deimos where a space station is in orbit and talk to the guy to either buy new ships or make changes to your ship just like the technician from earlier.
Keep in mind that every city and space station shipyard have different options to choose from. So you may like the habs from Deimos but you like the landing gear selection in Neon.

I understand and agree to an extent that games should still be able to be stored on an HDD and played. But Starfield is an exception because of how massive it is. An SSD helps with the loading and transitioning when traveling between planets and new zones. An HDD is just too slow for this.
But SSDs are much cheaper now and keep getting cheaper. I spent $300 for a 1TB SATA 2.5 inch SSD only about 8 years ago and I saw on Amazon that there is a 1TB NVMe SSD for only $49. If you’re willing to spend $70 on a game, you should be willing to invest $49 for a SSD.
- Comment on Anyone Else Having a Blast? 1 year ago:
Try going to different shipyards as each have different habs to choose from, this also includes different planet cities’ landing zones where you can talk to a technician.
There are habs, for example on Mars’ moon Demios’ shipyard, that are specifically for research.
