  What a wonderful episode.

  It’s almost creepy how happy Frieren is, at the prospect of her disciple being able to kill her. It makes sense though - not just because of the past, but because she basically raised Fern, which parent wouldn’t be happy when a child surpasses them?

    I think what made her extra happy, was Fern being confident enough to suggest that, rather than Frieren asking her to do it.

      This is definitely one thing. Her face lit up right after Fern suggested it at the end of the last episode.

      After this episode, I think it also has to do with Flamme. It was Flamme’s dream to make magic commonplace among humans. A human mage being able to kill her after so many years of her being essentially untouchable by humans means her teacher’s dream is becoming more and more real.

  Awesome episode once again. This show does flashbacks in a way that no other show does. I don’t mind at all that we had a break or two in the action to get a flashback, because the stories that they tell are always great. The flashback showing Himmel’s party fighting that other dungeon boss was great (loved that Heiter was just having an off day).

  However, the flashback with Frieren and Serie is the one I found most interesting. I remember reading the manga and coming away with the impression that Serie was…if not evil…at least didn’t have virtuous intentions. She always had a menacing aura about her, both in the way she was drawn and the way she acted. An example is that the sequence animated here, where a young Flamme holds hands with and travels alongside Serie feels like it is a mother reminiscing about her child that has long since left the home and accomplished great things. However, in the manga, it feels colder, like Serie is more detached from Flamme, driving home the point that she must have trained Flamme on a whim because she doesn’t seem to feel anything at her passing (chapter 53 if you want to read this sequence yourself). At least that is the impression I had when reading it.

  Finally, the OST this episode was great. It was able to transition so smoothly between these gentle flashback scenes to suddenly driving up the intensity in the Frieren battle. The animation is of course great, but I just wanted to call out the OST as well since I think it adds a lot to both halves of this episode.

    I think it is just one of the running theme that the elfs feel cold and detached from the humans who actually turns out to know them pretty well. Like Flamme knew exact how Serie is going to react in this episode. And of course we saw a lot of that from Himmel & Frieren.

    Re: Training Flamme on a whim

    Serie also talks about time. Delaying some task for 100 or 200 years is nothing to the long-lived elves.

    So the 15-20 years to raise and train a human is a blink of an eye to them, it could also be called a whim.

    Raising a cat or dog as a pet to a human wouldn’t even be the same thing, because even one of those from litter to grave takes up a good chunk of a human life.

    A human to an elf would be more like a butterfly or some other common insect. A couple of weeks of company and it’s gone.

  Yep. This is my favourite episode in the entire show. I like how seamlessly the flashback tied into the moment and how it enhanced the scene.

  Serie is an intriguing character. It seems like she’s actually proud of how much Flamme accomplished but at the same time I really do believe that Serie trained her on a whim. I think it’s because her expectations were shattered, in that she really wasn’t expecting anything at all. I feel it’s kind of similar in a way to how Frieren seemed so proud of Fern casually being able to kill her, except it’s a more active feeling.

  Of course, the fight scene was pure eye candy as usual. The animation is always nice, even in the low action scenes (I mean most of the show is dialogue anyway).

  I like how everyone just gather around to discuss how OP Frieren is. Also that sealing magic sounds like it could be incredibly useful.
