From what I understand if you let someone do their job, you are a piece of shit. I don’t agree with that statement whatsoever.

You’ve reduced the issue in a way that’s not a faithful representation.

I live in a country where this service is not available (anywhere!) But imagine being an elderly or person with disabilities, and this is the only job you can do. Imagine looking forward to contributing with what you can, and then someone like you shows up and takes over their tasks, just because they are not fast enough for you to not wait a few more minutes in line.
In any case, it should be the store to blame, because they don’t open more cash registers or hire more people and let customers in line

takes over their tasks
Every time I help bag this man is thankful.

Agreed. I wish I had a better grocery so close to me.

Well at Walmart the shit is bagged behind the counter next to the cashier, the belt stops at the scanner. I can’t help at all unless I’m completely getting in their way or make it look like I’m robbing them. Otherwise I agree.

There’s room at the end of the counter for bags, after scanning, goods are passed to the bagger. Very simple.

Your grocery store should switch to a single queue dispatching to all registers, instead of one queue per register. Queueing theory and human psychology predict that this will reduce the likelihood of customers having heart attacks over another customer’s slowness.

That’s how it works. It’s doesn’t matter once you have your groceries unloaded onto a conveyor.

In the examples I’m thinking of – like the Trader Joe’s in my city or the military commissaries I saw as a child – you don’t get assigned to a register until that register is free; so you’re never in a position to get upset over a specific other customer’s needs.
