Explanation: The Iconoclasm Controversies were an issue in the Byzantine Empire (centered in modern-day Greece and Turkiye) wherein a religious dispute arose over whether images of religious figures ("Icons") were permitted or forbidden. Both sides felt… very strongly on the matter, with both claiming divine favor or punishment according to the current position of Icons in Byzantine society. The pro-Icon faction would eventually win out, but it would take hundreds of years, and several abrupt policy shifts by the reigning Emperors before they got there.
Irene of Athens was the Byzantine Empress at the end of the First Iconoclasm Controversy - the end because she had the anti-Icon faction declared heretical, which obviously endeared her to the pro-Icon faction.
… she also murdered her son to take his throne.

I’ve been in the homes of Byzantine Rite Catholics, and holy smokes this meme doesn’t come close to doing it justice. Would have been impossible to know the colours of thier walls.
